GARMENT SUPPORTING LOOP.
No. 587,832. Patented Aug. 10,1897.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERASTUS W. JEWETT, OF SWANTON, VERMONT.
GARMENT-SUPPORTING LOOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,832, dated August 10, 1897.
Application filed November 5, 1896. Serial No. 611,144. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERASTUS W. J EWETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Swanton, in the county of Franklin and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and usef Lil Improvements in Garment Supporting Loops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in garment-supporting devices in the shape of a loop, formed of hard substances, such as bone, wood, metal, 850. I
An object of'the invention is to provide such a device which is of unique andsimple design, easily attachedv to a suspender or band, and which will readily permit a button secured on a garment or band to be quickly secured in and unbuttoned from the same.
A further object is to improve upon devices of this nature so as to render the device more effective in preventing the button from too easily slipping out of the buttonhole while rendering the operation of the device quite as easily and as quickly operated.
For a full and complete understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanyin g drawings, wherein corresponding letters indicate like parts in both views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device attached to a suspender and a button on a garment secured or buttoned in the same. Fig. 2 represents the loop in elevation detached from the suspender and button.
In the drawings, A represents a suspender or band broken away, having a loop a and a suitable buckle a for adjusting the same.
B is the loop device, preferably made of wire in the form of a loop, the upper part 0 being of triangular shape, with the base 0 uppermost to engage the loop 01' the suspender,
and the lower part vD is shaped like an inverted acorn, having two lateral or side extensions cl d and a lower extension or rounded apex d the loop being formed of one piece of wire bent into said form, the ends being suitably connected near the central portion of the base of the triangle 0. I do not confine myself to the use of wire in making said device, as it is evident that the same may be cast or stamped out of sheet metal or formed out of wood, bone, or any other suitable substance.
E represents a suitable button secured to a garment or band and which is usually inserted in said loop from the rear, asshown, by tilting the button first upon its edge, so that it will pass through the lateral projections of the lower portion D. Then the button is pressed downward, the shank finally resting upon or in the lower extension 02 On account of the sharp angles made by the lateral portions with the lower and upper portions of the device and the proximity of the lower portions of the triangle the button is held securely in place, its latitude of play is limited, and the objection encountered in other devices where the button is apt to slip out is obviated.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A garment-supporting loop comprising a triangular-shaped upper portion, having its base uppermost, and an acorn-shaped lower portion, its apex being inverted and forming sharp angles with lateral projecting arms d, d, the whole being formed out of rigid material, substantially as described and set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ERASTUS W. JEWETT.
