UNITED STATESl .PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE F. DYE AND EDVARD GONEILL, OF VALPARAISO, INDIANA.
BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,424, dated July 13, 1897.
Application led December 4, 1896. Serial No. 614,520. (No model.)
To all whoml t may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE F. DYE and EDWARD C. ONEILL, citizens of the United States, residing at Valparaiso, in the county of Porter and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable oth-' ers skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in antirefilling bottles; and it consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, all of which will be hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l represents a central vertical section through a bottle embodying our invention, the stopper and locking-pins being in position. Fig. 2 represents an enlarged detail perspective view of the stopper. Fig. Srepresents an enlarged detail perspective view of the locking-pin, and Fig. Llr represents an enlarged detail perspective view of the vertical locking-pin.
A in the drawings represents the bottle proper; B, the stopper; C, the cork; D, t-he lateral locking-pin, and E the vertical locking-pin. The bottle A is of ordinary construction, with the exception that itis formed at the upper end of its neck with an enlargement or head a and a weakening-.groove a. The said head is formed with a transverse passage a2, closed at vone end, as at as. The lateral locking-pin D is adapted to be slipped into this passage a2 and is provided with a transverse passage cl in one end. The said enlargement or head a is also provided with a vertical passage d4, so that when the said pin D is slipped into position the passage d will coincide in position with this passage a4. The vertical locking-pin E is of such size as to be readily accommodated in the passage a4, and when slipped down into the same through the end of the locking-pin D effectuallylocks the latter into position.
The stopper B may be of any desired material and construction and is applied in the neck of the bottle before the pinDis inserted into position. This stopper occupies a position between the weakening-groove d and the said locking-pin D, so that when the neck of the bottle is fractured on the line of said weakening-groove this stopper is removed with the head a.
The cork C is of any desired material and construction and is applied in the neck of the bottle below the weakening-groove a', so that when the said neck is fractured along the line of the groove a' the small particles of glass will be prevented from passing into the bottle. This cork C also acts to temporarily seal the bottle after the head a has been removed from the neck.
In applying the pin E in position it is coated with some suitable cementing agent, so that after once being inserted in the passage @4 it cannot be withdrawn from the same, and thus effectually locks the pin D and the stopper B in position.
After our improved bottle has once been opened it becomes so mutilated that its identity is lost, and it therefore cannot be fraudulently refilled with an inferior article, as the deception would be at once apparent.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In an antirefilling bottle, the combination with a bottle proper havingalateral passage and a vertical passage intersecting the same formed in its neck, of a stopper applied in the neck below the lateral passage, an apertured locking-pin applied in said lateral passage, and a vertical locking-pin passed down through the vertical passage and the aperture in the lateral pin and locking the latter in position, substantially as described.
2. In an antirefilling bottle, the combination with a bottle proper havingalateral passage forined in its neck of a stopper applied in the neck below said passage, alocking-pin having an aperture in one end and passed through said lateral passage to lock the stopper in position, and a vertical locking-pin passed through the aperture in the horizontal locking-pin for preventing its withdrawal, substantially as described. v
3. In an antirelling bottle, the combination with a bottle proper having alateral passage and a vertical passage intersecting the same, and an annular weakeninggroove IOO formed in its neck, an apertured locking-pin applied in said lateral passage and adapted to lock a suitable stopper in position, and a Vertical looking-pin passed down through the Vertical passage and the aperture in the 1at eral pin to lookthe latter in position7 substantially as described.
In testimony whereof We have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
GEORGE F. DYE. EDWARD C. ONEILL.
