A. H. PATRICK. LEVEL.
No. 585,850. I Patented July 6, 1897.
TT EL Nirnn STATES ATENT OFFICE..
LEVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 585,850, dated July 6, 189'?. Application tiled April 29, 1897. Serial No. 634,398. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDREW HownL PAT- RICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Booneville, in the county of Prentiss and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spirit-Levels; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invent-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in carpenters and brick-masons levels; and the object is to provide a simple and convenient as well as durable and reliable instrument of this class.
To these ends the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference-characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my improved combined spirit-level and plumb. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4. is a detail view of the vplumb-bob-locking device.
1 represents the usual rectangular frame, formed with the parallel edges 2 3, the edge 2 being provided with the usual spirit-level tube 4.
5 and 6 represent transverse circular oriiices protected by glass disks 7 7, and 8 9 represent spirit-level tubes fixed in said orifices parallel with each other and at an exact right angle to the level-tube 4. Thetubes 8 9 are also provided with vertically-alined guidelines 10 10, and 12 represents a longitudinal oriiice extending entirely through the fame, bisecting the transverse orifices 5 6 and also a chamber 13 in the lower end of the frame 1.
14 represents the plumb-line, fixed at its upper end to a bracket 15 in the frame, and it extends through the longitudinal orifice 12, its lower end being provided with the plumbbob 16, having a free pendulating movement i-n the chamber 13.
17 represents a threaded shaft mounted on the journals 18 18 in the frame between the chamber 13 and the edge 2, and the outer end is formed with a transverse slot 19 to receive the blade of a screw-driver for conveniently manipulating it.
2O represents a rectangular nut encompassing said threaded shaft, and its edges are formed with slots 21 21, which engage the lower ends of the parallel arms of a bell-crank lever 22, fulcrumed in the frame, the horizontal arm 23 of said lever terminating in a circular eye 24., which encompasses the plumbline at its juncture with the bob.
It will thus be seen that by means of the screw the eye 24 can be raised to allow a free movement of the blumb-bob, or by reversing themotion of the screw the eye can be made to engage the plumb-bob and prevent its movement.
VAlthough I have specifically described my invention with regard to the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention Without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is l A spirit-level comprising the rectangular frame 1, provided with the transverse orifices 5 and 6, the chamber 13, and the longitudinal orice 12 bisecting the said orifices and chamber, in combination with the parallel spiritlevel tubes 8 9 arranged in said orifices at right angles to the level-tube 4. and provided with the vertically-aimed guide-lines 10 10, the plumb-line 14, fixed at its upper end and extending longitudinally through said orice 12, the plumb-bob 16 secured to the lower end of said line within said chamber 13,the threaded shaft 17 mounted on its journals 18 18 in the frame, the nut 2O encompassing said shaft and provided with slots 21 21, the belli-crank lever 22 having lone end engaging said nut and its opposite end formed with an eye 24. encompassing said plumb-bob, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I' hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW? IIOWEL PATRICK.
