Description
UNITED STATES PATENT o EEIoE. v
LEWIS RoPERfoE PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA. 1
APPARATUS FOR `ADIVIIN-'ISIEIR'ING ETI-IER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 5,850, dated October 10, 1848. I
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, LEWIS RoPER, M. D., of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have discovered a new and useful Manner of Administering the Vapors 0f Sulfuric Ether through the Respiratory Organs, so as to Procure Insensibility to Pain, to accomplish which I have invented an instrument of a. new construction, Vof which I declare the following is a full and exact description.
My invention consists in making a vessel of metal, porcelain, wood or any other materials capable of holding a sufficient quantity, or more than a suiicient quantity of sulfuric ether to producle insensibilty to pain, when administered through the respiratory organs. The mouth ofsaid vessel is so shaped as to fit closely over the mouth and nose of the patient, as represented. in
the accompanying drawings at Figure A,
while the body of the vessel inclines downward and slightly inward, over and in front of the vessel at the point marked B, is an opening of convenient size for the admission of atmospheric air; in connection with which, on the inside of the vessel are one or more tubes as at C, of a corresponding size, for the purpose of conveying the air to a chamber D, situated at the bottom of the vessel and'formed by la perforated plate (previously 'held there by means of a sponge) and is conveyed withit through the respiratory organs into the system.
To make the apparatus more convenient l and portable while containing ether, a tight cover (represented by F) is provided for the part A, and the aperature B is so arranged as to be securely closed with a cork,
cover or screw. p
That which I claim as new in my invention and for which I desire Letters Patent, is-
The mouth piece, or the peculiar formation of the upper part of the instrument or vessel above described, `fitting closely over the mouth and nose, so as to administer the vapor of ether through these two organs simultaneously, and in combination therewith, the arrangement of the air tube and perforated plate.
LEWIS v ROPER.
Witnesses JOEL Cook, E. DURAND.
