umq, wnsnmsrm n c ANDREW Y. GORDON, OF MASSILLON, OIIIO.
TELEPHONE BRACKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,871, dated June 22, 1897.
Application filed November 2'7, 1896. Serial No. 613,545. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW Y. GORDON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Massillon, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telephone-Brackets; and I do hereby declare that the followingis afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in Which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the transmitter, showing the same properly attached and connected to the bracket. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the bracket-arm slightly elevated. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the weighted handle. Fig. at is a view showing a portion of the transmitter-connecting plate and the handle-connecting bar. Fig.
5 is a detached view of the swivel.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts in all the figures of the draw lngs.
The present invention has relation to adjustable brackets for transmitters for use in telephones; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the plate, which is ,securely fixed to a telephone or some other object, as desired, and should be of such a size that the objects and purposes hereinafter described can be carried out. The plate A is provided with the flanges a, which flanges are preferably formed integral with the plate and are located a short distance apart to receivethe short connecting-bar b. To the short connecting-bar h is hinged the arm B, which arm may be of any desired length, and as shown its ends are provided with the members cand cl. Through the member 0 and the short bar I) is passed the clamping-bolt O, which clamping-boltis provided with the screw-threaded nut 6, said screw-threaded nut being for the purpose of regulating the tension of the arm B at the hinged end of said arm. To the outer or free end of the arm B is connected the short bar f by means of the member cl and the clamping-bolt 9', through which parts said clamping-bolt is passed. To the short bar f is pivotally attached the swivel D by means of the pins or bearings g, which pins or bearings are located diametrically opposite each other. The swivel D is for the purpose of forming a support for the transmitter proper and the Weighted handle E. The transmitter F is formed in the usual manner and is provided with the ordinary appliances and attachments; but it will be understood that the present invention has no relation to any particular kind o f transmitter, except that a transmitter must be used to carry out the objects of the present invention.
For the purpose of providing a proper support for the transmitter the plate II is provided, which plate is provided at its bottom or lower end with the bar h, which bar is provided with the annular groove h. The plate His provided at its bottom or lower end with the shoulder 71 which shoulder rests upon the top or upper side of the swivel D.
The handle E is provided with two compartments 7t and it, one of said compartments being for the purpose of receiving and holding any heavy objects, preferably shot, which are for the purpose, when placed in the compartment, to so balance the handle E, with reference to the transmitter F, that said transmitter will remain at all times and under all circumstances in a true horizontal position and the handle hang in a true vertical position.
In use the desired number of shot or like material is placed in the handle through the aperture after which said aperture may be properly closed in any convenient and wellknown manner. For the purpose of properly connecting the handle to the receiver-plate proper the pin 7b is provided, which pin is properly entered into the aperture 7.0 and the set-screw 7t turned so as to properly hold the handle.
Another object and purpose of attaching the handle E to the plate H by means of the pin h is to provide a means for axially rotating the handle, which shifts the position of the weighted side of the handle, thereby providing a means for producing accurate adjustment, so as to hold the transmitter in a true and horizontal position by gravity.
It will be understood that by rotating the combined handle and counterbalance axially an accurate adjustment can be brought about without increasing or decreasing the load carried in the counterbalance, inasmuch as the weight or load is located upon one side of the vertical center of said handle and counterbalance.
It will be understood that the clampingbolts 0 and g can be tightened by means of their nuts, so that the arm 13, together with the short arm f, will be held in proper position, or, in other words, will be held at the position or angle adjusted to.
It will be understood that it is not abso lutely necessary to form two compartments in the handle E in order to carry out the purposes deseribed, but I prefer to so form the handle opposite the side carrying the weight.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the hinged arm B,
having attached to the free end thereof the short bar f, the transmitter-plate F, a plate carrying said transmitter, the swiveled handle E, provided with the compartments 7a and 7c and one of said compartments weighted, and a transmitter located above the weighted handle, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of a hinged arm frictionally held at its hinged end, a pivoted bar located at the free end of the hinged arm and carrying a swivel, the plate I'I, provided with the bar h, the handle E, axially connected to the bar h, and weighted upon one of its sides, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
