IVILLIAM I GOLLER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CHECK AND WASTE BOX (DR PROTECTOR.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,503, dated June 15, 1897. Application filed April 6, 1896. Serial No. 586,293. (No model.)
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM P. GOLLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check and Waste Boxes or Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improveinents in a box or protector to be used on check and waste cocks; and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement, and operation of the various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
Heretofore check and waste cocks which are designed to be embedded in the ground have been generally provided with a box or protector made of such material and construction that the earth and sand would enter the protector and prevent the ready engagement of the turning-rod with the valve, when the same were disconnected, and would also cause the parts to become worn by the action of the water escaping from the cock, and the sand, which would be caused thereby to cut the parts of the cock, and in the course of time render it useless. In the boxes or protectors for check and waste valves of the ordinary construction or now generally in use the waste-water could seep or pass therefrom, thus producing deleterious effects on cement or asphalt floorings when the check and waste cocks are placed below the same.
It is therefore the objects of myinvention, first, to provide a box or protector for check and waste cocks which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, strong and durable, and effective in operation; second, such a box or protector which shall be so constructed that the parts may be readily placed and secured together in such a manner that no particles of earth or sand can enter the same, thus keeping the cock in a free and unencumbered condition to admit of the connection therewith and operation of the turningrod, and, third, to provide a box or protector for check and waste cocks from which the waste-water may be drained to any desired point or place, so as not to saturate the surrounding earth or substance.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of my box or protector, showing a portion of the turning-rod and sleeve and the parts in position ready for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View, partly in elevation, taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the lower part of the box or pro- I tector with the cock removed therefrom.
Similar letters refer to like parts throughout the different views of the drawings.
A represents the base or lower part of the box, and is made hollow and cylindrical, of any suitable size and material, and is provided at its bottom with an annular flange or rim a, having openings a for screws or securing devices to fasten it to a suitable suport.
p The lower portion of the base A is formed with a floor a which inclines toward the opening a in its side, in which is secured a screw-threaded plug-tube a to which may be connected, by means of a coupling-nut a a pipe or tube a, leading to the sewer or any suitable point to drain the waste-water from the hollow base.
Theupper portion of the base A is provided on its opposite sides with semicircular recesses b, in which are fitted packing-pieces b, of any suitable material. The upper part of the base is also formed with diametrical projections 12 having holes 19 for the reception of screws 6 which pass through suitable openings in like projections c on the lower part of the hollow cylinder A, which forms the upper portion of the box, and secure it to the base portion. The lower part of the cylinder Ais formed with semicircular recesses c, which, when the cylinder A is in position, will, with the recesses 6, form circular openings for the projections O and O of the check and waste cook 0 which cock is provided with a rotary valve D, of the ordinary or any.
preferred construction, and is prevented from being turned too far by means of a pin or projection d on its upper portion, which engages a projection d on the cook.
The upper end of the valve D is provided with a flattened part (1 with which the fork e on the lower end of the operating-rod engages when it is desired to turn the valve. The upper part of the cylinder A is contracted and formed with an internal annular flange e, which fits snugly around the rod E. Above the flange e and in the upper part of the cylinder A is placed packing e of any suitable kind, which closes the upper end of the box, yet will allow the rod E to be easily turned. Secured to the upper end of the cylinder A is a tube or sleeve E, which may extend upwardly to any desired height and protect the operating-rod. WVhen the cock 0 is in position, the projections O and 0 thereof will rest in the recesses 19 and c of the cylindrical box, the packing h in said recesses forming a close connection, as is apparent.
The supply and service pipes, which are not shown, may be connected to the projections 0 and C, respectively, and may lead to any desired points or distances from the box or protector. The cock 0 is provided with an opening 0 through which the water may escape from the service-pipe when theyalve is turned to shut oii the supply, and as the water escapes from said opening it will be conveyed from the inclined floor a of the base through the tube a and pipe a to the sewer or other drain.
In order to prevent the box or protector from rusting, it may be covered on its inner and outer surfaces with a coating of tar or asphalturn or like material.
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with the hollow cylindrical base A, having the annular flange at, opening of, in its side and inclined floor (L in its lower portion, and recesses b, in its upper part, of the hollow cylindrical part A, provided in its lower portion with recesses c, and at its upper part with an internal annular flange c, the packing 0 on said flange, the sleeve E, secured to the upper part of the cylinder A, and the operating-rod E, passing through said sleeve and the upper part of said cylinder, substantially as described.
