Beit known that I, ALONZO L. SWEET, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Trimming Leather, of which the following is a specilication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention is designed for trimming leather strips intended for use in making harness-loops or for other purposes, said strips after being trimmed along their edges being cut laterally to form the loop or other blanks or articles.

In providing a machine for trimming the edges it is necessary to provide means for holding the edges of the leather as the strip is presented to the knives, and to provide means of adjustment whereby strips of different thicknesses may be trimmed.

' In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of the machine; Fig. 2, an elevation. Figs. 3 and 4 show details of construction.

The strip of leather to be trimmed is passed through grooves formed in the inner faces of guide-bars l, secured adjustably to cross-bars 2, extending between the side standards 3 of the machine. These cross-bars have dove-v tailed recesses provided with gibs 4L in the under sides of the cross-bars l, and by moving the guide-bars laterally of the machine the space between the grooves will be increased or diminished for diiterent widths of strips. These bars l carry the trimmingknives, the cutting edges 2O of which extend into the grooves of the bars l. These cutting edges are of angular form, so that the upper and lower corners of the side edges of the strips will be removed, leaving the strips with beveled edges. The knives are secured in 4recesses 6 of the bars l by the screws 7, and

access may be had to these screws for removing and placing the knives through openings S in the bars.

Rollers 9, carried on crossshafts lO, are arranged to press on the leather strip directly adjacent to the guide-grooves of the bars l, so that the leather will be pressed upon and held directly adjacent to the knives in order that the trimming of the edge may be accurately performed. These pressure-rolls are also laterally adjustable to correspond with the adjustment of the guide-bars and knives, and for this purpose right and left hand screwthreaded rods ll are arranged longitudinally in the cross-shafts lO, which screws engage blocks l2, extending inward through grooves 13 in the cross-shafts from the inner periphery of the rollers, being held to the rollers by screws engaging dovetailed headV portions 14, fitting in corresponding openings in the rings, which compose the rollers. By turning the screw-rods the rollers will be moved toward or from each other for difterent classes of work.

In order to adapt the machine for strips of different thicknesses, the upper and lower pairs of rollers must be adjusted toward and from each other, and for this purpose the rollers are journaled eccentrically in bushings 15, j ournaled in turn in side frames, the upper bushing having a handle by which it may be turned and the upper and the lower bushings being connected to move in unison through ,segments 16, connected therewith. The rolls may be driven by gearing in any suitable manner.

The knives are arranged a little back of the center of the rolls in an opening in the guidebars. In trimming eXtra-wide straps a table is placed under the leather to prevent it from sagging in the middle.

I claim as my invention* l. In combination in a leathertrimming machine, a pair of rollers, a pair of guiden bars extending across the ends of the rolls and in the plane ot the bight of the same, said guide-bars having grooves in the plane of the bight of the rolls to receive the edges of the leather projecting beyond the ends of the rolls and the knives in the said grooves to trim the said leather edges, substantially asdescribed.

2. In combination in a leatheretrimming machine, a pair of guide-bars having grooves in their inner opposing faces with knives therein, the supporting-frame, said bars being adjustable toward and from each other, and the upper and lower rollers arranged with their bight in the plane of the grooves of the IOO bars, said rollers being formed in sections one section being arranged adjacent to each guide-bar and adjustable to follow the adjustments of said bar, substantially as described.

8. In combination, the grooved guide-bars carrying the knives, the rollers consisting of rings, the shafts having the screw-rods extending therethrough, and the nuts extending from the roller-rings to engage the screwrod, said shaft being grooved longitudinally to receive the nuts, substantially as described.

4. ln combination, the traine, the grooved guide-bars, the knives carried thereby, the rollers intermediate of the guide-bars, and adjustable laterally, the supporting-bars of dovetail form tting notches in the guidebars along which the guide-bars are adjustable, substantially as described.
