Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
THOMAS H. WHITE, OF ORANGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED KNIFE-SHARPENER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,804, dated September 4, 1866.
To all 'whom t may concern;
Bc it known that I, THOMAS H. WHITE, of Orange, in the county of Franklin, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Knife-Sharpener; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference heilig had to the accom panying` drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination of circular cutters with each other and with an ordinary hone or sharpening-strop, the whole forming a convenient and simple apparatus for sharpening knives.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and use.
In the drawings, Figure l is a view of the front of my knife-sharpener. Fig. 2 is a view of the back of my knife-Sharpener. Fig. 3 is a view of one side of my knife-Sharpener.
The handle or stock A may be of wood or any other suitable material worked into thc proper form and size. Upon the stock A are screwed two circular disks, B B', of steel, the peripheries of which are beveled, as shown. These cutter-wheels are arranged upon the Vsame plane, and so that their peripheries are nearly or quite in contact.
' The disks are made with diamond or beveled edges, and are very hard, so that when a knife is drawn between them they take a shaving from each side of it as often as the operation is repeated, and thus the edge of the knife becomes thin and sharp; but this operation produces a rough saw-like edge, and it will be necessary to use the other part of my instrument in order to make a smooth edge.
That part of my instrument which I use for iinishing the edge is shown in Figs. 2 and 3,
and consists of a hone or strop, O, which may be made of any fine stone, or of a piece of nice thick leather. Its use is obvious.
The advantages that I claim for my knifesharpener are that it is cheap, simple, and has the necessary parts for forming a complete smooth cutting-edge.
that I claim as my invention, and desire to secure b v Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement and combination of the circular disks B B with the stock A and the strop or hone C, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
THOMAS H. WHITE.
