M. SGHAOHT.
CORSET.
No. 578,045. Patented Mar. 2, 1897.
@MQW/) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MINNIE SCHACHT, OF lNEW YORK, N. Y.
CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,045, dated March *2, 1897.
Application tiled August 25, 189B. Serial No. 603,876. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MINNIE SGHAOHT, a citizen of the United States,residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andeX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in corsets; and it consists in a corset which has two overlapping portions upon each side at its lower edge, each of which portions is provided with a series of openings and two independent lacing-cords, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to provide a corset with means for contracting or enlarging its lower portion according'to the size of the stomach of the wearer and thus enable the same size of corset to be worn by ladies having entirely different iigures.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations of a corsetembodying my invention and showing how the corset may be enlarged or contracted at its lower end. Fig. 3 is a detail view taken from the inner side of the lower portion of the corset and showing the two independent lacingcords. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the cords removed.
A represents the corset, which is provided with .the two overlapping portions B C at its lower edge, upon each side. Through the edge of the part B is made a series of openings D, which extend up along the edge of the part B as far as theoverlapping portions are open, and through the portion O are made two rows of openings G II, which extend di rectly through the portion O, and to the inner side of this portion C, along its edge, is secured a strip I, which has two vertical rows of openings J L. A separate lacing-cord O is used in connection with the three rows of openings G, H, and J and it is passed through the line of openings D and one of the other three, G, H, or J, according to the amount of contraction or expansion of the lower portion of the corset that may be desired. If but a slight expansion or contraction is desired, the lacing-cord O is passed through the opening D and the row of openings J in the strip I, as shown in Fig. l. lower portion of the corset is expanded so as to tit a large-sized stomach but when it is desired to contract the lower portion of the corset, as shown in Fig. 2, the lacing O is passed through the openingsD and G. Also secured to the inner side of the overlapping portion B is a strip Q, provided with a series of openings R along its inner edge. Through the openings R in the strip Q and those L in the strip lI a second lacing-cord S is passed, and which is always laced, for the purpose of keeping the two overlapping portions B C together and to give the lower portion of the corset the proper shape. While the main object of the cord S is to hold the two parts B and C together, it may also be used in helping to contract or expand the lower portion of the corset when necessary. The two cords O and S are entirely independent of each other and serve for different purposes.
By means of the construction here shown the lower portion of the corset can be enlarged or contracted to any desired degree, and the same number of corset may be made to fit numbers of persons having entirely different shapes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- A corset provided with the two overlapping portions B, O, the part C being provided with the two rows of perforations G, H, and the strip I, provided with two rows of perforations, combined with the part B provided with a row of perforations D, through its edge, and a strip Q, provided with perforations, and the two independent lacing-cords O, S, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this llth day of July, 1896.
MINNIE SCHAOHT.
