JAMES K. P. PINE, OFTROY, NEV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN NECKTIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,76?, dated September 4, 1866.
To fait whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JAMES K. P. PINE, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Necktie; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speeiiication.
My invention consists of an imitation necktie, adapted for use with the ordinary turndown collar, but constructed separately therefrom, having a body of card-board, paper, or analogous material, with an ornamental device produced upon its plain surface, either in imitation of the ordinary neckties, or representing the emblems generally adopted for denoting the various social organizations of society, such as the Masonic, Odd- Fellows, or temperance orders, or the different branches of the militarypserviee as the army and navy, or professions or other business occupations, as an engineer, architect, or a sailor, or any other proper design, and which may be either stamped, printed, embossed, lithographed, or photographed, or represented in any other suitablemanner thereon, either in colors or not, according as may be desired or most agreeable to the taste; and in addition to the above I attach to the necktie, made of paper or card-board, as described, and in the proper position thereon, an elastic loop, made either of india-rubber or other suitable elastic material, either by cementing it, or in any other proper manner fastening it thereto, by which loop, when the tie is to be worn, it can be held upon the neck of the person by placing it over the button or other device usually sewed to the front of the neck portion orbinding of the shirt.
In the accompanying plate of drawings one form of my new and improved necktie is illustrated, Figure 1 showing it when worn by a person 5 Fig. 2, a front view of the same detached from the neck; and Fig. 3, a view of the back or inner side, showing its loop, by which it is held'upon the neck.
a ct in the drawings represent my improved necktie, made either of white or colored paper, card-board, or any other similar material, of any desired thickness and stiffness, and of a curved shape, having such a length and width that when placed upon the neck of the person who is to wear it, as will be hercinafter described, it will extend under each end of the turned-down portion of the collar, or around the neck a sufficient distance to prevent its ends from being seen, and entirely cover the front portion of the neck-binding of the shirt, as in the ordinary neckties heretofore used.
The outer or front surface of the necktie, made of paper or card-board, as above described, is ornamented with the design of a bow or knot, b-such as is formedwith the ordinary neckties-0r with any other suitable design denoting any of the various occupations, professions, or social organizations of society, and either in color-s or not, as may be desired, which design can be either stamped, printed, or in any other proper manner represented thereon.
In lieu of stamping, printing, or embossing the design intended to be represented on the necktie directly upon the main portion of the same, as described, it can be so represented upon a separate and distinct piece of paper therefrom, and then attached thereto by ccment, mucilage, or by0 any other proper adhesive material; or a piece of woven cloth, silk, or other similar fabric having the desired design may be so attached to the main and paper portion of the necktie; and, furthermore, the necktie can be made of one or more layers or sheets of paper of varying or equal thickness, secured together in any proper manner. and of various qualities and neness, it being only necessary that the outer or exposed one of the same should be ornamented with the desired design, either in imitation of the ordinary woven necktie, or representing any emblem that may be suitable and proper.
c is a loop, made either of india-rubber cord or any other suitable elastic material attached to the inner side of the necktie, and at or` near its lower edge, or any other proper part thereof, by means of cement or any other adhesive material, or by sewing or by any other suitable means, and either with or without the covering and holding-piece d, placed upon and over the ends thereof, in contact with the surface of the necktie, which piece may be secured to the same by cement, glue, mucilage, or any other proper adhesive substances. By this loop, when lthe necktie is to be worn, it is held upon the neck of the person, it being placed over the button or other fastening deprinting, embossing, painting, staining, or vice for the collar, usually sewed upon the otherwise.
front part of the neck-binding,` of the shirt. The above specification of my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letsigned by ine'this 20th day of April, 1865.
ters Patent- JAMES K P PINE The imitation necktie herein described,
adapted for use with a turn-down collar, and Witnesses:
consisting of paper of any desired quality or C. E. DAVENPORT,
thickness, the surface being ornamented by H. D. SHERRILL.
