Description
M. P. KYLE. SKIRT SUPPORT.
(No Mogiel.)
Patented Jan. 19, 1897..
WWI/Lem m a4 wm gfw I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IIINPIRVA P. KYLE, OF BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA.
SKI RT- SU PPO RT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 575,483, dated January 19, 1897,.
Application filed April 23, 1896.
To all whom it may concern:
I Be it known that I, MINERVA I. KYLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of J elferson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt-Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in a device to be attached to the waistband of a dress-skirt to prevent the sagging thereof; and the objects of my improvement are, first, to provide a metallic connectingplate for skirts, the device rigidly attached to one side of the waistband at the slit and adapted to engage the opposite side with the hooks formed on the plate; second, to provide a metallic plate attached to the waistband of a dress-skirt, as shown, the device forming a rigid connection of the skirt parts and preventing the sagging or slipping down of the same; third, to provide a metallic plate connection extending on both sides of the slit in a dress-skirt to form a rigid support for a sufficient distance to carry the full or weighty part of the skirt and prevent the sagging thereof. I attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical back view of part of a dress-skirt with my device attached thereto on one side of the slit. Fig. 2 is a vertical back view of the same, the device hooked and the slit closed. Fig. 3 is an enlarged outside plan view of my skirt-support and the connections thereof. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of the same throughout the center.
Similar numerals refer to throughout the several parts.
The part of a dress-skirt 1, as shown, represents a skirt as usually constructed, the top edge of the skirt provided with a waistband 2, attached thereto, a slit 3 beingformed in the skirt, the slit extending downward in the usual manner.
similar p arts The skirt-support 4 is made of steel or other Serial No. 588,703. (No model.)
suitable metallic plate formed as shown. One half of the plate is made plain and provided with a series of holes 5 for the stitches to attach the plate to the garment. The opposite end of the plate is provided with a hook 6, formed thereon. The plate is provided on the inside with a series of vertical hooks 7, the vertical hooks distributed on the plate between the end hook and the center thereof. The vertical hooks can be made of any of the usual forms, pointing upward, the lower end rigidly attached to the plate in any desired manner.
The attaching-plate 8 is made of suitable metallic material. It is partly split in the center, and the part 9 on one side of the split is pressed outward to allow the end of the supporting-plate to pass under. The device is provided with the usual holes for stitches to secure it to the garment, and when attached forms a rigid and secure bearing for the end of the support.
The eye-plate 10 is made of suitable inetallic material. It is partly split in the center, and the part 11 011 one side of the split is pressed down to allow the point of the support-hook to enter and engage the remaining half 12, forming the eye. Holes are provided in the device for stitches to attach it to the garment in the usual manner. Any other form of eye or a loop can be used, if desired, to engage the hook.
The supporting plate 4 is rigidly attached to the skirt-waist on one side of the slit, as shown in Fig. 2, one half of the plate being secured to the skirt, the remaining half extending outside the edge of the slit. The eyeplate 10 is attached to the skirt on the opposite side of the slit, and a series of eyes or loops 13 are formed or attached to the skirtband to engage the vertical hooks 7 on the support. hen the parts are hooked together, the skirt appears as shown in Fig. 2, the plate extending on both sides of the slit and forming a rigid support thereto to pre vent sagging in the skirt.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a skirt-support, the combination with the skirt of a metallic plate 4: partly attached to 7, substantially as and for the purpose dethe Waistband thereof, a securing-plate 8 enscribed. 10 gaging the end of the support, the free end In testimony whereof I affix my signature of the support provided with an inwardlyin presence of tWo Witnesses.
5 turned hook 6, and a series of vertical hooks MINERVA P. KYLE.
7, the skirt provided with an eye-plate 10 Vitnesses: adapted to engage the hook 6, and a series of JNO. R. PERKINS,
loops 1.3 adapted to engage the vertical hooks H. VAUGHAN.
