ROBERT MUNN DIXON, OF EAST ORANGE, NEWV JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE SAFETY OAR HEATING AND LIGHTING COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 575,055, dated January 12, 1897.
Application filed March 20,1896. Serial No. 584,026. (No model.)
To a whom, it may concern/.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT MUNN DIXON, residing at East Orange, Essex county, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new 5 and useful Improvements in Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to lamps, and has for its object to produce a new and improved lamp suitable for use in railway-cars.
[ My invention will be understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a vertical transverse section of a lamp embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a I 5 section on line 2 2 thereof.
In the drawings, A represents the main casting of the lamp, from which depends an expansion chamber B, which communicates with a gang or gallery of burner-tubes a a,
which are surrounded by a casing D and cooperate with a spreader E. Located adjacent to the lamp-castin g Ais a lamp-casing F,which surrounds a chimney-gallery G, which'supports the casing D, and also a two-part ring H I, which supports a globe J, surrounding the burner.
In the practical construction and operation of the type of lamp just described I have found that the expansion-chamber B is liable to become unscrewed, it being supported by screwing into the gas-supply pipe K. To overcome this tendency, I have provided the looking screw or pin L, which passes through the casing]? and engages the expansion-cham- 3 5 ber, preferably by engaging a lug b,with which the expansion-chamber may be provided. This prevents the unscrewing of the expansion-chamber from its supporting-pipe. It.
has also been found that the burner-gallery 0 is also liable to become unscrewed from the expansion-chamber. To avoid this, I fasten a lug 0 upon the expansion-chamber and pass a screw 61 therethrough into the upper ring 6 of the burner-gallery.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a lamp, the combination of a gas-supply pipe, an expansion-chamber depending therefrom and connected thereto by screwthreaded connections and provided with engaging means adapted to be projected into engagement with the engaging means on the expansion-chamber, a chimney-gallery provided with transverse inlet air-openings surrounding said expansion-chamber, a casing surrounding the chimney-gallery, a lockingpin carried by the casing and projecting through a transverse inlet air-opening in the chimney-gallery and into contact with the engaging means upon the eXpansion-chamber, substantially as described.
2. In a lamp, the combination of a gas-supply pipe, an expansion-chamber depending therefrom and connected thereto by screwthreaded connections and provided with engaging means adapted to be projected into engagement with the engaging means on the expansion-chamber, a chimney-gallery provided with transverse inlet air-openings surrounding said expansion-chamber, a casing surrounding the chimney-gallery, a lockingpin carried by the casing and projecting through a transverse inlet air-opening in the chimney-gallery and into contact with the engaging means npon the expansion-chamber, a burner-tube gallery suspended from the expansion-chamber, a lug mounted on the expansion-chamber and a screw passing through the lug and entering a part of the burnertube gallery, whereby the parts may be securely locked from rotation upon each other, substantially as described.
