Description

(No Model.)
lC. NQ LIPPITT. WATER TANK AND HEATER. No. 574,919.4 Patented Jan. 12,1897.
' @im 1f UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES N. LIPPITT, OF BELOIT, IVISCONSIN.
WAT/ER TANK AND HEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,919, dated January 12, 1897.
"0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES N. LIPPITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beloit, in the county of Rock and State of W'isconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water Tanks and Heaters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to combined hotwater tanks and heaters, and the object is to provide a simple and convenient device for supplying hot water for the various domestic purposes; and to this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The figure in the drawing is a vertical section of my improved hot water tank and heater combined.
A is the outer cylindrical shell, and its lower end is provided with screw-threads a, by means of which it is removably secured to the screw-threads b on the upper edge of the cylindrical shell B of the combustion-chamber C, which is provided with a series of orifices c c to admit air to the interior of said chamber. The upper end of said chamber C is provided with a central vertical flue D, the lower end d' of which is screw-threaded to engage the screw-threaded orifice cl2 in the crown-sheet D', the circumferential edge of which forms a joint in the recess a', formed between the lower edge of the shell A and the upper contiguous edge of the shell B.
This flue D is provided with a series of water-tubes d, radiating in different directions. The upper end of said flue D is prof vided with a conical hood E, terminating in a stock F, which is provided with an integral externally-screw-threaded collar G, which engages the central internally-screw-threaded orifice H of the top I of the shell A, and K is a flanged screw-threaded lock-nut which forms Application led .T une 10, 1896.
Serial No. 5 94,9 97. (No model.)
a joint with the top I and the flue D. By removing this lock-nut the shell A may then be unscrewed from the combustion-chamber 4to have access to the inside for the purpose of cleaning, repairing the water-tubes, and such other purposes as occasion may require.
In some instances I locate the heater in the cellar or basement of a dwelling and connect it by pipes circulating through the building, and in this case I use coal in the combustion-chamber. If, however, it is used as a hot-water tank in the kitchen, it may be heated by oil or gasolene, or connected to the water-back of the stove or range in the usual manner.
I am aware that a cylindrical outer shell and an inner shell provided with transverse tubes have been used, and such I do not de sire to claim broadly.
Although I have specific-ally described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A combined tank and heater, comprising the crown-sheet D', removably secured in the annular recess a by the contiguous edges of the shells A and B, and having the circular central oriiice cl2, the vertical iiue D, having a lower threaded end and removably secured in said central orifice in the crown-sheet, and its upper end provided with an externallythreaded smoke-stack and internally-threaded flanged lock-nut K, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. CHARLES N. LIPPITT.
