Be it known that I, CHARLES II. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Haven, in the county of Ottawa and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and vuseful Improvements in Portable Dust-Deflectors for Car-Vindows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has for its object to provide a dust deflector or screen which may be folded into small compass, so as to be conveniently carried by travelers, and which in the eX- tended position may be placed in ordinary car-windows and will prevent dust from entering, without in anyway closing the window or interfering with the passage of air.

With this end in view I have devised the novel construction of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, numbers being used to designate the several parts.

A denotes a car-window, B the sill, and C the jamb. These maybe of any ordinary construction, as my novel portable deector is capable of being used in connection with all styles of car-windows.

l denotes the carrier, which may be a strip of wood and which is provided with a longitudinal recess 2, which receives the screen 3 in the Closed position.

The screen -may be made of any suitable material, as, for example, strong paper or textile material, suitably stiffened, and is folded in accordion-plaits, so as to permit it to be folded into the most. compact form possible, as in Figs. l and 2. The screen is rigidly attached to the carrier in the recess. At the outer edge of the screen is a binding-strip 4, preferably made of metal and which is provided with holes 5 near its ends.

6 denotes arms which are pivoted in the carrier, as at 7, are offset, as at S, and the outer ends of which are turned at an angle, as at 9, to adapt them to engage holes 5 in the binding-strip to lock the screen at the eX- tended position, as in Figs. 3 and 5.

In use the screen is extended and locked at the extended position by engagement of the ends 9 of the arms with holes 5 in the bindingstrip, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The

carrier is then placed in the front j amb of the window, t'. e., the side farthest from the occupant of the seat, if facing forward and toward the locomotive, the screen being on the outer side of the window. The window is then shut down upon the carrier, so that the latter is held between the window and the sill.

The carrier may or may not be provided on its outer face with rubber pads 10, adapted to be crowded into the j amb to assist in holding the carrier firmly in place and prevent it from turning, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3. When not in use, ends 9 of the arms are removed from holes 5, the screen is folded up, as in Figs. l and 2, and the ends 9 of the arms are inserted in holes l1 in the carrier, the arms lying over the binding-strip and retaining the screen in the closed position until the ends 9 are removed from holes ll.

I-Iaving thus described my invention, I claim- 1. A portable dust-deiiector for car-windows consisting of a carrier provided with holes 11, afolding` screen attached thereto and provided on its outer edge4 with a bindingy strip and arms pivoted to the carrier and adapted to engage the binding-strip to hold the screen in the extended position and to engage holes 11 in the carrier to hold the screen in the closed position.

2. A portable dust-deector for car-windows consisting of a carrier having a recess 2 and holes 11, a folding screen one end of which is fastened in the .recess and the other provided with a binding-strip having holes 5, and arms pivoted in the recess and having ends turned at an angle which are adapted to engage holes 5 to hold the screen at the extended position and to engage holes ll to hold the screen in the closed position.
