SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,400, dated May 19, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK H. EDDY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to bottles, and the object thereof is to provide a bottle which, having been once filled, may be emptied of its contents, but cannot again be used, or which cannot be once filled and emptied without leaving evidence of that fact.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure l is a central vertical section of the neck of a bottle provided with my invention; Fig. 2, a side View thereof showing a portion ofthe neck broken away; Fig. 3, a transverse section of the neck on the line 3 3 of Fig. l, and Fig. 4 a perspective view of a tubular casing for the neck of a bottle which I einploy.

In the practice of my invention I provide a bottle A, a portion of which only is shown, with a neck B, which is preferably vertically corrugated, as shown in Fig. 3, and formed in the outer walls of the neck B, about midway of its length, is an annular groove or recess C.

The outer walls of the neck of the bottle above the annular groove or recess C are inwardly contracted, as shown at D, and formed thereon, near the top thereof, is the usual head or shoulder E.

lVithin the neck of the bottle, above the annular groove or recess C, is formed an annular inwardly-directed shoulder or projection F, the upper walls of which are inclined upwardly and outwardly, as shown at f, and the neck or nozzle of the bottle is adapted to be closed by a cork G, which is forced thereinto, and said cork may be provided at its lower end with a head H, formed by means of an annular groove or recess K, or said cork may be of the usual form, and when forced into the neck under pressure the lower end thereof will expand, as shown in Fig. l, and

the cork cannot be withdrawn. I also employ a tubular casing L, which is adapted to be inserted over the neck of the bottle, as shown in Fig. 1, said casing being intended to prevent the accidental breaking of the neck at the annular groove or recess C when the bottle is being handled in shipping or storing, and said casing may be composed of wood, paper, or any preferred material, and the object of the vertical ribs M, formed by the vertical corrugations in the neck of the bottle on the outer surface thereof, is to provide means whereby said casing will be held in place and be caused to closely fit the neck, while the object of contracting the walls of the neck above the annular groove or recess C is to pro vide means whereby the' accidental breaking of the neck at said annular groove or recess in applying or removing the casing A will be avoided. s

When the bottle has been filled and the stopper G applied as hereinbefore described, the stopper cannot be removed, and in order to empty the bottle it is necessary to remove the tubular casing L, which may be done whenever desired, and to break off the upper end of the neck, as shown in Fig. 2, and when the bottle has been emptied it cannot be reilled, as will be readily seen, without leaving evidence of the fact that it has been once used.

I may also place a trade-mark, or the name of the manufacturer of the bottle, or of the proprietor of its contents, upon the upper portion of the neck, and the absence of this feature would also be proof of the fact that the bottle has once been used.

It will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and well adapted to produce the result for which it is intended.

Having fullyl described my invention, I claim' and desire to secure by Letters Patent-n 1. A bottle, the neck of which is provided with an annular groove in its outer walls, said neck being also provided in the inner walls thereof, above said annular groove, with an inwardly-directed annular shoulder, the upper walls of said shoulderbeing upwardly and outwardly inclined, the outer walls of the neck of the bottle being provided with verti- IOO cal corrugations and a tube or casing upon said neck substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination with the neck of a bottle, provided with an annular groove in the outer Walls thereof and vertical corrugations or ribs on its outer surface, of a tube or casing adapted to inciose said neck, substantially as shown and described.

3. The combination With the neck of a bottlc provided with an annular groove in the outer Walls thereof, and vertical corrugations or ribs on its outer surface, of a tube or casing adapted to close said neck, said neck above said annular groove or recess being also inwardly contracted whereby the tube or casing comes in contact with the lower portion thereof, substantially as shown and described.
