Mink/556's ANDREW Barnum.mum-mmwasmnsmmnc V NITED STATE PATENT rrrcn.
ALBERT B. BLACK, or SEVERY, KANSAS.
CLOTH DISPLAYING, MEASURING, AND CUTTING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,294, dated May 19, 1896.
Application filed September 3, 1895. Serial No. 561,250. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT B. BLACK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Severy, in the county of Greenwood and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oloth Displaying, Measnrin g, and OuttingApparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in apparatus for displaying and measuring and cutting off cloth and textile and woven material generally; and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same which shall possess superior advantages with respect to efficiency in operation.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully'described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of an apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 isa detail perspective view of the knife-bar. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing a modification. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view showing a modified construction of knife.
In the said drawings, the reference-nu moral 1 designates a rectangular frame provided with one or more transverse rollers 2, (two being shown in the present instance,) upon which the goods to be measured are wound. These rollers areprovided with cranks 3 and ratchet-wheels 4, with which are adapted to engage pawls 5, pivoted to the side of the frame for preventing the goods from being unrolled by the weight of the part drawn out.
Above the rollers 2 are rollers 6, one for each of the rollers 2, over which the material to be displayed, measured, and cut passes. Pivoted to the front of the frame is a folding platform or table 7, upon which the goods being displayed can rest. One side of the table or platform engages with a catch 8, by which it is held in ahorizontal position. The upper edge of one of the sides of the frame is formed with a scale 0, by which the quantityorlength to be cut off the goods can be determined.
At the rear end of the frame is an arm 10, with which is connected a spring tape-measure 12.
The numeral 13 designates a knife-bar pivoted to a block 13, secured to the side of the frame, so that it may be swung out of the way when desired. At the opposite side is a catch for holding the bar in place when swung across the frame. This bar on its upper side is formed with a slot 14, extending from end to end thereof, and upon one side with an intersecting slot 15. \Vorking in slot 14 is a knife 16, secured to a block 17. This block is provided with a guide 18, consisting of a metal plate working in slot 14 and havingits free end bent at a right angle and passing through slot 15 and its extremity bent upward and engaging with the side of the bar. At one end the knife-bar is provided with two spring-arms 19, which engage with the edge of the cloth while the knife is being operated. Engaging with the arms is a lifter 20, consisting of a yoke 21, pivotally connected with the bar and having one end bent inwardly, so as to engage under one of said arms. The other end of the yoke is bent outwardly and then inwardly, forming a handle 23, and the extremity projects under the other spring-arm.
Any'number of the rollers desired or found convenient may be employed, and the operation is as follows: One end of the goods to be displayed and measured and cut is secured to one of the rollers 2 and wound thereon by means of the crank. To display the goods, they are drawn out over the knife-bar, so as to rest upon a table or platform. By means of the scale, which should commence at a point in line with the slot in the knife-bar, suit-able lengths may be measured and then cut off by moving the knife across the goods.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the block or handle to which the knife is secured is prbvided with lugs 24, in which are journaled rollers 25, and the slot in the side of the bar is dispensed with. Otherwise the construction is the same as the bar first described. 7
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is p v 1. In a cloth or dress-goods displaying, measuring and cutting apparatus, the combination with the frame, the roller to which the cloth is secured provided with a crank and ratchet-Wheel and the pawl, the roller above the same over which the cloth passes, and the tilting platform or table, of the pivoted knifebar having a slot therein, and the knife working therein; substantially as described.
2. In a cloth displaying measuring and cutting apparatus the combination with the frame having a scale in one edge, the roller to which the cloth is secured, the crank, the ratchet-Wheel the pawl and the tilting platform or table, of the pivoted knife-bar having intersecting slots in the side and top, the knife-block, the knife secured thereto hav- ALBERT B.
