BEER TAP.
Patented Oct. 20, 1896.

UNITED STATES PATENT EEicE.
EDVARD C. POST, OF MONROE, MICHIGAN.
BEER-TAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,800, dated October 20, 1896.
Application iiled September 7, 1895. Serial No. 561,825. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, EDWARD C. POST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monroe, in the county of Monroe and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Coupling Device for Various Uses, the saine being more especially designed and adapted for beer, ale, or other liquid taps, by means of which the bodies of the taps are securely fastened to a tap-hole bushing in a barrel or package, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon.
Myinvention consists in the construction of that class of taps that are more particularly employed for ina-king tap connection with barrels or packages from which beer, ale, or other liquids are drawn under pressure and delivered at some distance from the barrel or package.
In the drawings, Figure l is a partial, vertical, central, longitudinal section through my improved tap, as connected or coupled to a tap-hole bushing. Fig. 2 is a side View of the saine. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the body of the tap. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the same. Fig. 5 is a vertical, central, longitudinal section of the lower part ot' my improved tap, showing a different style of dogs. Fig. G is a horizontal section of the same. Fi g. is a vertical, central, longitudinal section of the lower' part of my improved tap, showing another style of connections. Fig. S is a horizontal section thereof.
In another pending case filed by me of even date herewith for a device of this nat-ure, Serial No. 561,826, I have shown the body of the tap provided with a cam to actuate a pivoted dog.
F. is the hollow body of my improved tap, having the stuffing-box A and branch E', as is common in this style of taps. The lower part E of the tap may be attached to the body E by means of a thread T if it is desired to make use of the upper part of some old tap. The lower part E has an upper threaded portion T, which engages the cone-shaped nut F', and may be screwed up or down on the thread by means of the handles or ears F. Below the threaded portion T the projections or brackets I are provided, to which the dogs G are hun g by pins or rivets II. The dogs G have upper extensions G, which may be faced oft conical on inside for engaging with the conical nut F. The lower ends of the dogs G terminate in the jaws L, which are intended for engaging under the flange l( of the bushing O. IV hen the nut F is screwed down and its conical face presses against the conical surfaces G of the dogs G, the pins II act as fulcrumpoints for the dogs G and the lower jaws L are forced inwardly, engagin under the flange K of the bushing O, whereby the body of the tap is drawn down onto the face of the bushing O and a tight joint is insured by the packing X.
I prefer to bevel the upper or engaging faces of the jaws L in order to take up the slack between the two faces of the coupling. It will be Obvious that as the upper ends of the dogs G are spread to tighten the jaws on the coupling member or bushing each variation of the distance between the dogs will cause their jaws to contact at a different point on the coupling member or bushing.
In the style of coupling device illustrated in Figs. 5 and (3 the threaded port-ion T of the body E is dispensed with and a conical thread is eut onto the outer faces of the dogs G. The nut F', having a conical thread, will, when screwed down, force the jaws L of the dogs G inwardly, whereby the jaws are firmly set un der the liange K of the bushing O, insuring a tight joint with the packing X.
In the style illustrated in Figs. 7 and S the threads are dispensed with altogether, the dogs G being actuated by means of the cam F and the links F".
I do not confine myself to the specific shapes of the dogs G, but they may be made in any convenient shape to best answer the respective requiremen ts.
lVhat I claim new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a coupling device for the purpose described, a hollow body, dogs G fulcrumed to the lower portion of said body and provided with jaws L at their lower extremities, and a nut having a threaded engagement with the lower portion of said body above the fulcrums IOO 1o Il, and means to aotuate seid dogs, said dogs having a, beveled engaging face to take up the sleek between the two faces of the coupling, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
EDWARD C. POST.
