IMPROVEMENT IN COOKlNG-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,686, dated July 24, 1866.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EsEK BUssEY, of the city of Troy, county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cooking-Stoves; and I do hereby declare the following to-be a clear, full, and exact description thereof, reference being hereby had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and which drawings make a part of this specification.
Like letters represent and refer to like or corresponding parts contained in my aforesaidnamed invention and improvements.
I have deemed it best to accompany this specification with two sheets of drawings, marked Sheet I and Sheet II, in order to more correctly represent my said invention and improvements.
Figure l is intended to represent an ordinary cooking-stove having my invention and improvements thereto attached and combined, and which will be hereinafter described in detail. Fig. 2 represents an elevated oven cooking-stove, showing my aforesaid-named invention and improvements applied thereto, and which will be more fully hereinafter described and set forth. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a cooking-stove containing my aforenamed invention and improvements, as hereinafter described. Fig. 4 represents a boiler or water-reservoir, and which will be fully described and set forth hereinafter. Fig. 5 represents, in perspective, the top plate of a cooking-stove bottom side up, so as to show the flange connected and combined with the said boiler or reservoir, in the manner and for the purposes substantially as herein described and set forth.
The nature of my said invention and improvements consists in the employment of an annular or surrounding flange cast upon the under side of that part of the top plate of a cooking-stove projecting outward and over the immediate top of a boiler or water-reservoir, and made and arranged so as to flt into the top or opening of such boiler or reservoir, in the manner and for the purposes substantially as'herein described and set forth.
It also consists in the employment of small openings or apertures in and upon the inside of said boiler or reservoir next adjoining the stove and near to the upper edge of such boiler or reservoir, and the same communicating with the flue or flues or with the exit-passage of a cookingstove, and so arranged as to permit or allow the escape of any excess of steam or vapor into such flue, fines, or exitpassage, which may arise from the heating of water or other matter contained within said boiler or reservoir, in the manner substantially as herein described and set forth.
It also consists in arranging and combining the cover or covers of said boiler or reservoir therewith in such manner that when the same shall be opened or raised up from the opening of said boiler or reservoir the moisture or water which may have gathered upon the under side thereof by reason of the action and condensation of the steam or rising vapor coming in contact therewith, 'or from any other cause, the same shall return to or dip into such boiler or reservoir, while said cover remains open, as aforesaid, and in the manner substantially as herein described and set forth.
It also consists in the employment of an intermediate vertical plate between the rear oven-plate and that part of said boiler or reservoir which forms and completes the outside, rear, and vertical end plate of the cookingstove patented to me on the 5th day of December, 1865, in the manner and for the purposes substantially as herein described and set forth.
Having thus described the nature of my said invention and improvements, I will here proceed to describe the construction and operation of the same, so that those skilled in the art may make and put into successful use my said invention and improvements, which are as follows, to wit:
I construct the cooking-stove in any desirable form or shape. Upon the rear part or end thereof I arrange and combine the boiler or reservoir A, Fig. 1. The said boiler or reservoir is arranged with the whole thereof just below the top plate of the stove, which extends and projects over and beyond the rear end of the said stove, substantially as shown at Fig. 3, Sheet II, of the accompanying drawings. In this projecting plate B, Figs. 1, 2,
3, and 5, I construct the boiler-hole opening or aperture 0, Figs. 3 and 5, which may be of any size, form, or shape deemed best, and
will, however, in all cases conform to the size, form, or shape of the top of the said boiler or reservoir to be used.
I usually make said reservoir of cast-iron, and in but one part or piece; but it is evident that it may be made of wrought-iron, tin, copper, or like material. I
D, Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 5, is a flange cast upon the under side of aforesaid outward projection of the said top plate, B, of the stove, and itis constructed around and near to the edge of the said opening or reservoir-aperture 0, substantially as shown at D D, Fig. 5, and the said flange may be of any size or thickness deemed best and which will answer the required purpose. The said flange will project down and into the top of the said boiler or reservoir A, substantially as shown at Figs. 1, 2, and 3, and it serves to sustain and support said boilerin its proper and required place and position. The under side of the said top plate, B, will rest, or nearly so, down and upon the top or upper edge of said boiler A, substantially as set forth in the accompanying drawings.
E, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, represents the lids or covers, by which the said reservoir A is covered over and the material therein securely inclosed therein in safety. The said lids or covers may be made in any form or shape desirable, and in size to correspond to the size of the opening or aperture 0, and they are hung upon or suspended upon the said extension of said top plate, B, of the stove, by means of a hinge, a, Fig. 1, and b, Fig. 2, which are so constructed as to allow the, said covers to be turned upward or opened to their respective positions set forth in the accompanying drawings, and are then stayed or stopped from going farther backward, and this is for the purpose of allowing the moisture accumulated upon the under side of said cover while closed upon and over said boiler to pass from or to drip from said cover down into said boiler, and thus prevent the same from running upon the floor or upon other parts of the stove. It is quite immaterial as to which side orpartofsaid boiler-hole or aperture O the said hinge or hinges are located or used, and the said hinge or hinges will in all cases be so constructed and arranged upon the said extended top plate as to closely fit down and upon said plate when closed, as aforesaid, and thus prevent the escape of steam into the room where said stove is being used.
The said boiler or reservoir A contains several small openings or apertures, d, Fig. 4, which are for the escape of steam from within the said reservoir or boiler A into a fire-flue space or spaces in the immediate rear of the oven and below the top plate, B, of the stove.
F, Figs. 1 and2, is an. intermediate or protecting plate, and it is within the fire-flue space and opposite to the upright side of a reservoir or boiler, which forms and completes the whole or a part of the lateral casing of and on the outer or rear side of such fire-flue space, and may be used to protect the said boiler or reservoir from too strong action of the passing heat or escaping products of combustion. It may be placed nearer the said reservoir than the oven-plate, so as thereby to make a flue-space of less capacity, if deemed best so to do, and as may beseen atFig.1. This plate has an open space or passage, H, Figs. 1 and 2, at or near the bottom or lower edge thereof, so as to admit the hot air or escaping products of combustion into the flue-space F. The said intermediate plate F, Fig. 1, contains, at or near its upper edge, several small openings or apertures, c, for the escape of the heated air in the said flue space'or' chamber F, same figure.
The bottom edge of said boiler A rests down and upon the lower plate, I, Figs. 1 and 2, and is there firmly secured, substantially as stated in my said Letters Patent upon improvements in cooking-stoves, dated, as aforesaid, December 5, 1865.
The outside part of said boiler or reservoir A may be fastened or secured to the said outward-projecting plate by means of a bolt, with nut and screw arranged thereon, substantially as shown at B.
J, Figs. 2 and 4., is the exit-pipe passage to the chimney.
The top or upper edge of said boiler or reservoir A rests against the under side of the projection of the top plate, B, of the stove, with the said flange D extending downward therein, substantially as shown in the said drawings.
It is manifest that when it is desirable to use a boiler or reservoir placed at a short distance from the rear end of the stove, and from the vertical plate by which the end of the stove is formed, instead of being formed by means of said boiler, as aforesaid, said reservoir may be suspended underneath and fastened to said extended top by means of suita ble bolts, as at B, Fig. 2, and not change the invention herein contained.
Having thus described my said invention and improvements, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The annular surrounding and downwardprojecting flange D, or any equivalent thereof, in combination with the boiler or reservoir A, in the manner substantially as and for the purposes herein described and set forth.
2. The apertures 61 in the boiler or reservoir A, in combination with the exit flue or flues in the rear end of a cooking-stove, in the manner and for the purposes substantially as herein described and set forth.
- 3. The arrangement and combination of the lids or covers E with the reservoir A, so that the water or moisture on the under side thereof, by reason of condensation of steam, may and shall pass or drip into said boiler A, in the manner substantially as herein described and set forth.
4. The arrangement and employment of the intermediate and Vertical plate F, in combination with the said reservoir A, in the manner and for the purposes substantially as herein described and set forth.
