SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,510, dated August 25, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARVEY J. FLEGAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clearfield, in the county of Clearfield and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coat- I-Iangers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has relation to improvements in coat-hangers, and the object is to provide a hanger of the kind named and for the purposes intended, which is provided with a clamp readily and conveniently adjusted to press down on the lapels of a coat or similar garment that may be suspended from and held by the hanger.

I have fully and clearly illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein Figure 1 is a front view of the hanger and the adjustable clamping device. Fig. 2 is a side view, partly in section, of the adjustable clamping device, an outer position thereof being indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a detail of the tongue-bracket.

A designates the hanger piece or bar, made of wood, or any suitable material, curved as shown, to substantially fit in the shoulders or yokes of a garment, and of such length as to suit it to the size of the article it is to hold. To the middle. of the hanger is secured a suspension-hook 2, of any proper style or shape, by which the hanger is connected to a rod or other thing in suspension.

To the middle of the hanger is secured a bracket or plate B, provided with holes 3, through which screws or nails are projected into the material of the hanger to fasten the bracket in position. The bracket B is formed with bearings 41: at its upper end to take in and pivotally retain the ends of the jaws of the pivotallyhung clamp, as hereinafter specified. The bearings 4 are preferably made integral with the plate of the bracket, and consist of extensions of the metal turned over and down, substantially as shown. At the base of the plate of the bracket is formed a tongue 5, directed outward and curved upward, and provided with racks or notches 6 6 on each edge, the shoulder of the notches being at their upper ends, so that the pivotally-supported clamp may be readily and easily moved down, but cannot be pulled outward and upward without releasing the j aws thereof from their engagement with the notches. On the upper end of the tongue 5 are formed lateral projections 7 7 which prevent the jaws of the clamp from being drawn clear of the tongue.

0 designates the pivotally-supported clamp, consisting of a single piece of suitable springwire, formed with a circular or oval-shaped part 8 at its lower portion, adapted to set against the outer surface of a coat or similar garment, and from the circular part the wires are carried up parallel to each other the desired length, as at 9 9 and curved inward at 10, and bent laterally at right angles in* ward, and then directed vertically and parallel to each other, forming jaws 11 11 adapted to engage the notches in the curved tongue, and having the ends 12 bent outward and arranged in the bearings 4, so that the clamp may be moved outward and inward and held at any angle desired to hold the lapels of the coat or garment lapped over each other. The clamps may be released from the'notches of the tongue by simply pressing the bars of the clamp inward and then moving the clamp to the position de sired. A cross bar or wire 13 may be fixed in the hanger, on which a pair of trousers may be hung in a well-known manner.

The use and application of the invention or device are readily perceived from the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, but they may be briefly restated as follows: The bow or hanger is arranged in the shoulders of a coat or vest and then the fronts of the garment are lapped or laid over eachother and the clamp pulled down and pressed against the lapped portions to hold them in the position to which they have been arranged. When heavy garments are placed on the hanger, the clamp cannot be pushed down as far as when light garments are placed thereon, but the adjustable functions of the clamp readily adapt it to any thickness of material, and all kinds of coats are held with equal security. The hanger, after the garment has been arranged ICO thereon, is then detachably suspended from any suitable support.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A hanger for garments, comprising a curved hanger-bar,havin g a suspension-hook, a bracket secured to the middle of the hangerbar and formed with a curved tongue directed outward and upward, and a clamp consisting of a single wire bent into an enlarged lower part, and spring-arms directed therefrom having their ends pivotally hung in the bracket and arranged to embrace the edges of the tongue of the bracket and hold the clamp down on the garment.

2. A hanger for garments, comprising a curved hanger-bar, having a suspension means connected thereto, a bracket secured to the middle of the hanger-bar and formed with a tongue curved outward and upward and provided with notches in its edges, and a clamp consisting of a single wire bent circular at its lower portion and parallel arms projecting therefrom crossed at their upper portions and formed with parallel jaws having their ends journaled to the bracket and engaging in the notches in the tongue thereof.

A hanger for garments, comprising a curved hanger-bar having suspension means connected thereto, a bracket secured to the middle of the hanger-bar and formed with a tongue curved outward and provided with notches in its edges and lateral extensions at its end, and a clamp consisting of a single wire bent circular at its lower portion and parallel arms projecting therefrom, crossed at their upper portions and formed with parallel jaws having their ends journaled on the bracket and arranged toengage in the notches in the tongue and to lodge under the lateral extensions thereof.
