Description
(No Model.) I
I. M. POLLEY. REIN SUPPORTER.
No. 564,221. 2 Patented July 21, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISABELLA M. POLLEY, OF SIMCOE, CANADA.
RElN-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,221, dated July 21, 1896.
Application filed July 20, 1895. Serial No. 556,657. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISABELLA M. POLLEY, a citizen of Canada, residing in Simcoe, in the county of Norfolk, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rein-Supporters, called the Safe Elevated Rein-Supporter, for which I have taken out a caveat in Canada, dated September 17, 1894.
My invention does away with many of the annoyances connected with driving. WVhen placed at the required height on the dashboard, it makes driving easier, pleasanter, and safer. It prevents the reins from sagging and the driver being obliged to hold them up.
The reins, being placed in separate compart-ments, cannot become crossed, and if buckled cannot get out of the vehicle. The horse when switching its tail is not irritated by getting it caught in the reins, which is often the cause of many accidents.
The following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the rein supporter secured to the dashboard. Fig. 2 is a drawing of the improvement embodying my invention. Fig. 3 is a drawing of the clamp.
C C are rods to elevate or lower the reinsupporter; C C where clamps secure the rods; II H, attachments with square holes through which the rods are passed and drawn out or in to fit dashboards of any width.
K, to the right, is a compartment for the right rein; I, compartment for the left rein, or, the driver sitting to the left, the right rein will be put in the compartment I and the left rein in the compartment K'to the left.
L L are scrolls; M M, corners that can be square, as in the drawings, or curved, if desired. Y
O is a knob, to which a rein-fastener is riveted.
The fastener is placed next the rod and left with suflicient opening to receive the reins and retain them when the driver leaves the vehicle.
B is a clamp which is cast in halves. Two clamps are required, and in some cases four, for each set of rein-supporters.
D is a thumb-screw passing through each half of clamp to tighten clamp and rod to the dashboard.
E is an opening for clamp to clasp the dashboard.
F is a hole for upright rod to pass through.
My invention can be made in sizes, of wrought-iron, or cast in malleable cast-iron, brass, &c., and finished in silver, nickel, bronze, white metal, 850. I
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The rein-support herein described, consisting of the three rein-compartments, supported upon the double scroll, a spring rein-holder connected to the latter, and the clamps and set-screws for holding the device adjustably and detachably to the dashboard, substantially as described.
ISABELLA M. POLLEY.
