Description

G. 0. SMITH. BATTLE.
(No Model.)
No. 552,399. Patented Dec. 31, 1895 INVENTOH A TTOHNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
GEORGE 0. SMITH, OF FISHKILL-ON-THE-HUDSON, ASSIGNOR TO THE NEW YORK RUBBER COMPANY, OF FISHKILL, NEW YORK.
RATTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,399, dated December 31, 1895.
Application filed June 24, 1895. Serial No. 553,875. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE 0. SMITH, of
Fishkill-on-the-Hudson, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Rattle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to toys; and its object is to provide a new and improved rattle, which is simple and durable in construction, and arranged to form a pleasing and noisemaking toy for infants.
The invention consists of a bell formed with an exterior annular recess engaged by a handled elastic ring.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
The improved rattle is provided with a bell A formed with a casing A, provided at or near its middle with an annular recess A engaged by an elastic ring B, provided with a suitable handle B, made of rubber in the form of a teething-ring. In inserting the bell A in the ring B, the latter gives sufficiently, owing to its elasticity, so as to permit of springing the ring B over one-half of the casing A, to finally seat the ring in the recess A The bell is thus securely attached to the ring B. Within the casing A is arranged a transverse partition A dividing the bell-casing into two compartments, each of which contains one or more balls A It will be seen that by the arrangement described the slightest movement of the handled ring B causes the balls to rattle Within the compartments in the bellcasing, and consequently produces considerable noise.
As illustrated in Fig. 2, the partition A extends in alignment with the center of the ring B, so that the bell-casing A extends equally on both sides of the ring B, and consequently ornaments the ring on both sides. It is understood that by making the partition a transverse one, it strengthens the bell directly under the annular recess, besides dividing the easing into two compartments.
The device constructed as above set forth is extremely simple and inexpensive, and is adapted to serve not only as a rattle or toy, but also as a teething-ring on which the infant may bite when teething, said ring at the same time forming a convenient handle for the rattle.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture, a toy comprising a rubber body having elastic rings at its ends one of which is formed into a teething ring, and a rattle consisting of a casing having inclosed balls and an exterior groove, said casing being inserted in the other ring of the body and held therein by the engagement of said elastic ring in said exterior recess, substantially as set forth.
