To all whom, it may concern:

Be itknown that I, ELIZABETH GLADVVIN EOUTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsfield, county of Berkshire,and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mucilage- Bottles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

My invention relates to mucila-ge-bottles and means for discharging the mucilage therefrom and applying the same without the use of a brush, and involves the application to such devices of means for spreading the mucilage and preventing the closing of the discharge-opening, and for enlarging said opening so as to permit of the discharge of the mucilage.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a mucilage-bottle provided with my improvement, and Fig. 2 a transverse sect-ion thereof on the line 2 2.

In the practice of my invention, I provide a bottle A, of any preferred form, within the nozzle B of which is removably placed a hollow cork or stopper 0, formed preferably of soft rubber, so as to be elastic, and within the bottom of which is secured a tubular plug D, which serves to expand the stopper 0 at its lower end, which is thus made tubular and adapted to fit and be held within the neck or nozzle of the bottle when forced thereinto.

The upper end E of the stopper C is flattened, as shown in Figs. 1 and :2, and the passage F therethrough is also, as will be seen, correspondingly flattened and made thin, so that the mucilage will flow therethrough and be spread upon a surface by the discharge nipple or point E, as will be readily understood.

Secured within the stopper 0 and between the lower inner walls thereof and the tubular plug D is a fiat metal plate or spring, which extends upwardly through the stopper and out at the flattened end thereof, as clearly shown, said plate or spring being preferably about the same width as the discharge-passage F and being slightly curved outwardly at the outer end, as shown in Fig. 2.

In operation it is only necessary to hold the bottle inverted or tilted and to spread the mucilage by means of the flattened end of the discharge point or nipple, as will be readily understood, only the required amount of mucilage passing therethrough, and in this op eration the spring-plate acts to open or expand the discharge-passage, and thus admit of the flow of the mucilage, the elastic character of the stopper and its flattened extension permitting of such expansion. It will also be observed that the spring-plate G acts to prevent the passage F from being closed by the mucilage, which has a tendency to dry and become hard therein, and which may be prevented by working or moving said springplate back and forth and expanding and corn tracting the passage, as will be understood.

claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a bottle having an inwardly directed projection of the character described, the combination of an elastic hollow discharge stopper, provided with a restricted extension and adapted to be secured within the neck of said bottle, and rest upon said flange, of the flat metallic strip secured within said stopper, the

end of which extends into the opening in the restricted portion thereof and a tubular plug, in the lower end of said stopper to secure said'strip and stopper in position within the neck of the bottle, substantially as described.
