SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,198, dated November 19, 1895.

To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, HANS H. SATER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Madison, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the furrow side of the plow. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the landside. Fig. 3 is a plan View. Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing the colterhub and the manner of mounting the colter. Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are details of the colter-supporting yoke.
My invention relates to plows, and has for its object to provide certain improvements in the plow described in my application of even date herewith, Serial No. 533,538. These improvements relate principally to the mechanism for vertically adjusting the frame for the purpose of throwing the plow into or out of the ground and for regulating the depth of the plowing; and such improvements consist in providing improved lever mechanism for effecting such adjustments.
My invention also consists in certain improved means for securing the landside in place, which will permit of its being readily removed for certain kinds of plowing.
My improvements also relate to the devices for supporting the colter and to certain other details of construction, which will be hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, 10 indicates the plowbeam, which, as shown in Fig. 3, is preferably of the bifurcated construction shown in my application, Serial N 0. 533,538, filed January 2, 1895. It may, however, be of any other approved construction.
11 indicates the plow-standard.
12 indicates the moldboard and 13 the share, which are secured to the standard in the usual way.
14 indicates a rear wheel, which is mounted on a suitable spindle 15, journaled in a sleeve 16, supported by a brace 17, which is connected to the standard 11, as shown in Fig. 1.
18 indicates a seat-bar, which is connected to the beam 10, and at its rear end receives the spindle 15, a spring 19 being arranged under the seat-bar, as also shown in Fig. 1. These parts are described inmy application, Serial No. 533,538, above referred to.
20 indicates a seat, which is supported by a bar 21, rising from the seat-bar18.
22 indicates a brace, which is connected to the brace 17 and to the beam 10, as shown in Fig. 2.
The front portion of the beam is supported at one side by a double crank-axle 23, which is j ournaled in suitable boxes 24 25, connected to the beam, as shown in Fig. 3. A wh-eel26 is mounted upon one of the crank-arms 27 of said axle, as shown in Fig. 3. The opposite side of the plow is supported by a vertical rod or bar 28, which carries a wheel 29. The supporting-rod 28 is connected to the beam by a laterally-projecting bar 30, as shown in Fig. 3, said bar 30 being connected to asleeve 31, which encircles the bar 28, and is movable vertically thereon, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The bar 30 is provided with a slot 32, so that the point at which it is connected to the sleeve 31 may be adjustedand the distance of the supporting-rod 28 from the plow-beam be thereby adjusted. The sleeve 31 carries a segmental rack 33 at its rear side, as shown in Fig. 1. At the forward side of the sleeve and connected thereto is a bracket 34, as shown in Fig. 1, to which is pivoted the forward bifurcated end of a lever 35, said lever being fulcrumed to a link 36, pivotally connected by a cap 37 to the upper portion of the bar 28, as shown in Fig. 1. By this construction by operating the lever the sleeve 31 may be vertically adjusted upon the bar 28, thereby adjusting the beam vertically.
The. lever 35 carries a dog 38, which engages therack 33, and is operated by ahand lever 39 and connecting-rod 40, looking said lever at different positions.
41 indicates an adjusting-lever, which is pivoted upon the lever 35, and may be locked at different positions by means of a dog 42, which engages a rack-bar 43, secured to the lever 35 in a suitable position, as shown in Fig. 1. The lever 41 is connected by a connecting-rod 44 to the second arm 45 of the crank-axle 23, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, so that by operating said lever41 the axle 23 may be rocked and the position of the landside of the plow be thereby regulated.
In order to give the axle 23 a yielding action and to avoid danger of breakingthe parts when the plow strikes an obstruction, a spring 46 is provided, which is mounted upon the rod 44 between the lever 41 and the arm 45,
as shown in Fig. 1. The arm 4L5 is also provided with a number of perforations to permit of adjusting the posit-ion at which the rod il is connected to it, as shown in Fig. 1.. It will be seen that by this construction, when desired, by operating the lower lever both sides of the plow-beam maybe simultaneously adjusted vertically, as for the purpose of throwing the plow into or out of the ground and for regulating the depth of the plowing. By adjusting the upper lever 41 the plow may be tilted for throwing the plow out of the ground or deeper into the ground. I prefer to arrange the levers ii at theangle shown in Fig. 1, in order that they may be readily accessible to the operator when either walking or riding.
a? indicates the landside of the plow, which is detached from the share 13, and is secured in position by braces 45 if) 50, as shown in Fig. 2. The brace i8 is connected by screws or other suitable devices to the standard 11. The brace 49 is connected in a similar man nor to the moldboard 12, and the brace 50 extends from the point of connection of the brace a9 with the moldboard. to the standard ll. By this construction the landside 5L7 may readily be removed when desired.
51 indicates a colter, which, as shown. in Fig. 3, is supported by a yoke 52, connected to a laterally-projecting arm secured to one member of the beam 10. The yoke 52 is adjustable laterally and is secured to the arm 53 by a clamp 5i. The colter 51 is secured to the yoke 52 by a shaft 55, which forms a spindle for the colter, passing through the ends of the yoke 52. At each side of the colter 51. is a conical sleeve 56, which sleeves are fixedly secured to the colter an d are provided with oil-ducts 57 at one side, as shown in Fig. l. The outer ends of the sleeves 50 rest in cup-bearings 58, which in turn bear againstthe inner faces of the ends of the yoke 52. To hold the bearings 58 rigid, they are each provided with a lug 59 on their outer faces, which lugs are adapted to fit into slots 60 in the ends of the yoke, as shown in Fig. (5. The outer faces of the ends of the yoke 52 are provided with U-shaped flanges 61, and the ends of the yoke are confined tightly against the bearings 58 by nuts (32 and washers (33 between such nuts and the ends of the yoke, the washers 63 being provided with recesses 64:, adapted to receive the flanges (31. The nuts 62 are screwed upon the ends of the shaft 55, as shown in Fig. 4:.
\Vithin the sleeves 56 are plugs 65, and between such plugs is a spring 66, which bears against the plu and holds them apart. The plugs 65 serve as bearin for the shaft 55 and also to strengthen the sleeves 56.
That which I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a yoke, and a shaft connecting the ends of said yoke, of a colter mounted upon said shaft, sleeves mounted upon said shaft between said colter and the ends of said yoke, plugs (35 within said sleeves, and a spring between said plugs, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a yoke 52 having slotted ends, of a colter, sleeves 56, caps 55 having lugs adapted to enter the slots in said yoke, a shaft connecting the ends of said yoke, and nuts 62, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a yoke 52, havil'ig slotted ends, of a colter, sleeves'56, caps 58 having lugs adapted to enter the slots in said yoke, a shaft connectin gthe ends of said yoke, nuts (52, and washers 63 between the nuts and the ends of said yoke, substantially as described.

In a plow, the COlllblllfLldOll with a beam, and furrow opening devices, of a double crank axle supporting the forward end of the beam, a wheel mounted upon one of the arms of said crank axle, a vertical support for the opposite side of the beam, a lever conn ected to the beam and fulerumed upon said support for raising and lowering thebea-m, and an adj ustin glever mounted upon the former lever and connected to one of the arms of said crank axle, substantially as described.
5. In a plow, the combination with a beam, and furrow opening devices, of a double crank axle supporting the forward end of the beam, a wheel mounted upon one of the arms of said crank axle, a vertical support for the opposite side of the beam, a lever connected to the beam and fulcrumed upon said support for raisin and lowering the beam, an adjusting lever mounted upon the former lover, a rod it connectin g said adj usting lever to one of the arms of said crank axle, and a spring on said rod, substantially as described.
6. In a plow, the combination with a beam, and furrow openingdevices, of a double crank axle supporting the forward end of the beam, a lever for raising and lowering the beam, and an adjusting lever mounted upon the former lever for rocking said double crank axle, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
7. In a plow, the combination with a beam, and furrow opening devices, of a crank axle connected to the forward portion of the beam and carrying a land wheel, a lever for adjusting the beam vertically, and an auxiliary leve r for adjusting the position of the land wheel, substantially as described.
8. In a plow, the combination witha beam, and furrow opening devices, of a double crank axle 23 connected to the forward portion of the beam, a wheelmounted upon said axle, a laterally projecting bar 30 connected to the beam, a sleeve 31 connected to said bar, a forwardly projecting bracket 3i connected to the sleeve, a segmental rack also connected to said sleeve, a lever pivoted to said bracket, and a vertical support forming afulcrum for said lever, substantially as described.
