Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55.925. dated June 26, 1866.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID I. STAGG, of the city, county, and State of New York, have in vented anew and usefulCombination of Stand, Writing-Desk, and Book-Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot this specin'eation, in which- Figure l is a front view of my invention adjusted as a writing-desk and book-holder; Fig. 2, side sectional view ofthe same, taken in the line .fr m, Fig. 1.

This invention relates to a new and useful combination of a stand, writing-desk, and book-holder constructed as hereinafter fully shown and described, where the device may, with the greatest facility, be adjusted so as to be used i'or any of the purposes above specitled, and still be simple in construction and economical to construct.

A represents un upright supported by a suitable base, B, and having a horizontal circular plate, C, on its upper end, the edges of which are fitted in cleats a, attached to the under side ot' a hed-piece, D, which may be of rectangular forni and ot' any suitable dimensions, the upper end of the upright A titting looselyin a hole or socket in the under side of the bed-piece. This mode ot' connecting the bed-piece to the upright admits of the former turning 'reely.

E represents a hook-holder, which is a rectangular frame attached hy hinges b to one edge ot' the bed-pieceD in such a manner that it may be folded horizontally down on the hedpiece, as shown in blue outline in Fig. 2. A

F represents a hoard, one edge otA which has a cleat, c, attached to its under side at right angles, and the lower edge of this cleat is attached, by hinges, d, to the edge ot' the bed-piece opposite to that edge where the book-holder is hinged. The cleat c admits of the board F being folded horizontally down over the bookdiolder E, as also shown in blue in Fig. 2.

To the outer or lower edge of the bookholder there are attached by pivots two arms, G Gr, in which fingers H are pivoted. These arms serve to support the book, while the fin gers hold the book open, being adjusted against the leaves at each side thereof. In order to use the book-holder, the board F is raised and supported at a proper degree ot' elevation by a bar, I, which is hinged to the upper surface of the hed-piece D, and the raised edge of F serves as a support for the book-holder, holding it in a proper inclined position, While the inclination ot' the board F admits ot' its being used as a writing-desk, as shown in tint in Fig. 2. This will prove to be very convenient in many cases, as a person, for instance, in perusing a book on the holder, may, in case it is desired to make a minute ot' any passage, simply turn the device around and brin gthe desk before him and effect that object.

In ease two book holders are required, the board F may be still further raised, so that the top of the hookholder may rest against it, as shown in red outline, Fig. 2, and the lower edge of F may be provided with the arms and fingers like those ot' the hookholder, and two persons may read from two dit't'erent hooks on the same device. To adjust the device as a stand, the boolrholder E and support or bar I are turned down upon the bed-piece, land the board F turned or folded down upon them, the board F forming the top ot' the stand.

The construction and arrangement are extremely simple. It is not essential that the device be made to revolve, and in some eases revolving ones would not he required, the bed piece D merely resting on a table, and in certain cases the device may be set in a table, or the bed-piece made of much larger dimensions `than the book-holder, so as to aii'ord space for books and other articles to rest upon.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent- The stand, writing-desk, and book-holder` consisting of the bed-piece D, hinged frame E, hinged board F, provided with the lingered arms G G, and hinged bar I, combined and operating in the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
