JAMES S. ALEXANDER, OF JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA.
FAN ATTACHMENT FOR SWINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,533, dated April 7, 1896.
Application filed November 21,1895. Serial No. 569,725. (No model.)
. T aZZ whom it may concern.-
' 3 is a detail View.
Be it known that I, J AMESS. ALEXANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to swings, and its object is to provide the same with an oscillating fan, which is automatically operated by the movement of the swing.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l-is a perspective view of a swing constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a central transverse section of the same. Fig.
In the said drawings the referencenumeral 1 designates inclined supporting-bars arranged in pairs at opposite sides of the swing and crossed near their upper ends and the bars of each pair secured together by bolts or screws 2. These bars may be planted in the ground or, as in the present instance, they may be secured to a base 3. At the upper ends the bars of each pair are connected by cross-pieces 4, to which are secured horizontal bars 5, provided with eyes 6. Connected with these eyes are hooks 7, secured to the upper ends of crossed swinging bars 8. Secured to the rear swinging bars is a chair comprising the seat 9, back 10, and the side bars 12, secured to the seat and back and to the lower ends of said bars.
The numeral 13 designates a foot-rest secured to the lower ends of the swinging bars by means of pins 14 passing through apertures therein and in the foot-rest. There are a series of these holes in each bar, so that the height of the foot-rest may be adjusted to accommodate persons of varying sizes.
Journaled to the rear cross-bars near the upper ends is an oscillatory shaft 15, provided intermediate its ends with radial fan-blades 16, and near one end has wound upon it a cord or rope 17, the ends of which are secured to a lever 18, pivotally attached to one of said bars. Near its front end this lever is formed with a slot 19, with which engages a headed pin 20, secured to one of the front swinging bars.
During the operation of swinging, the headed pin on the front swinging bar engaging with the slot in the lever 18 will oscillate the latter, and through the medium of the rope or cord will oscillate the fan-blades and shaft.
For the purpose of regulating the tension of the cord 17 I provide the coil-spring 21 and the headed bolt 22. By such means the said cord is kept taut at all times with repect to the oscillatory shaft 15, thereby securing its successful operation irrespective of the angle occupied by the swing proper.
If desired, I may construct the cord entirely or partially of some elastic material instead of employing the means just described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with the supporting-bars, the transverse and horizontal bars connected therewith, the crossed swinging bars and the chair, of the oscillatory shaft journaled to the rearcross-bars, the cord wound thereon, the lever pivoted to one of said swinging bars to which the ends of the cord are secured and formed with a slot near the front end and the headed pin secured to one of the front swinging bars and engaging with said slot, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J AS. S. ALEXANDER.
