J. W. DAVIS & E. C. BROWN. KNEE PAD.
No. 554,776. Patented Peb. 18, 1896.
v NTTED STATES PATENT Omron.
JAMES WALTER DAVIS AND ELIJAH CLARK BROVN, OF WEST, TEXAS.
KN E'E-PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.`554,776, dated February 18, 1896.
Application led October 25, 1895. Serial No. 566,884. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES WALTER DAVIS and ELIJAH CLARK BROWN, citizens of the United States, residing at West, in the county of McLennan and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Knee-Pad, of which construction of a device which can be applied to the lower'portion of the limb and secured thereto in a positive manner without occasioning inconvenience or causing annoyance to the person wearing the same, and which is adjustable within certain limits to adapt it to diiferent-sized persons.
Other objects and advantages are contemplated and will be apparent as the 4nature of the invention is better understood, and to this end the improvement consists in certain details and novel combinations of parts, which hereinafter will be more fully set forth, illustrated, and claimed.
The drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention, although slight changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention, and in said drawings` Figure l is a perspective view of the improved device. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof Fig. 3, a transverse section on the line X X of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a bottom perspective view of the pad disconnected from its mountings.
Referring to the drawings, in which the same reference-numerals indicate corresponding and like parts in all the iigures, l denotes the pad proper, which comprises a metal portion 2 conformed to the knee portion of the limb and a suitable backing 3, of sheep-skin or upholstery of any kind, so as to provide a cushion for the knee, thereby rendering comparatively easy and comfortable the otherwise irksome task of picking cotton, berries, Svc. The metal portion 2 excludes darnpness and protects the knee from injury in the event of a stone, root, or other unyielding object coming beneath and opposite to the knee. For the sake of lightness the part 2 is constructed of sheet metal, which is provided in the form of an oblong blank, and which is curved downwardly betweenits edges, and which has one end slitted and the portions bordering upon the said slit bent or curved upwardly, so as to extend in front of the knee when the device is in operative relation. The backing or cushion 3 may be secured to the inner or upper side of the metal part in any desired or convenient manner.
Side bars 4C, of wood or other light material, extend in parallelism and are adapted to come upon opposite sides of the limb, and are of such a length as to extend from the ankle to the knee, and their upper ends are formed with slots 5, which receive the fastenings G, by means of which the pad is adjustably connected to the said side bars. e
The fastenings 6 are bolts which extend through the side portions of the pad midway of their ends, and which have their threaded extremities projecting through the slots 5 and supplied with binding-nuts 7, by means of which the pad is held in the required adjusted position. The lower ends of the side bars have connected therewith a suitable harness for attaching them to the foot of the wearer, and this harness in the present instance consists of a heel-strap 8 and a strap 9 for passing beneath and around the instep of the foot, so as to prevent vertical displacement of the device after the latter has been properly adjusted to the limb. Straps or tapes l0 are attached to the sides of the pad near its front or top end and are designed to pass around the limb immediatelybeneath the knee, so as to complete the attachment of the device to the limb.
It is obvious that a person engaged in picking cotton, berries, treating low plants, &c., will wear a pad upon each knee, thereby securing the full benefits ofthe invention. The means employed for connecting the pad to the side bars admit of the pad being adjusted longitudinally relative to the said side bars as well as being turned upon the fastenings ICO to any required angle to suit the ease and convenience of thc person wearing the contrivance.
The device can be worn either in a kneeling or upright position without inconveniencing the wearer, and this is one of the salient featurcs and principal objects of the invention, as will be readily comprehended from what has been said.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new isl. A device of the character and for the purpose herein specified, comprisin g side bars, means for securing them to the human limb immediately below the knee and to the foot, a linee-pad, and means for adjustably eonneeting the knee-pad to the said side bars, substantially as and i'or the purpose set forth.
2. In a device of the character and for the purpose speciied, the combination of side bars having slots at one end, means for securing the side bars to the human limb, apad, and fastenings operating in the slots of the side bars to secure the pad to the said side bars in an adjusted position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination, side bars having slots at one end, a harness applied to the opposite end of the side bars for securing them to the foot of a person, a pad, fastenings operating in the slots of the side bars to adj ustabl y connect the pad therewith, and straps attached directly to the pad and adapted to be passed around the limb immediatelyr beneath the knee, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. The herein shown and described device for the purpose set forth, comprising akneepad, straps applied to the front end of the pad, side bars having longitudinal slots at one end, fastenings operating slidably and tiltingly in the said slots andhaving connection with the sides of the pad to connect it in a tilting and sliding position with the side bars, a heel-strap secured to the opposite ends of the side bars, and a foot-strap to engage with the lower portion and instep of the foot, substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto afIiXed oursign`atures in the presence of two witnesses.
