Description

NITE STATES FREDERICK HULSMANN, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
EXERClSlNG-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,636, dated February 11, 1896.
Application filed May 31, 1295. Serial No. 551,151. (No model.)
T0 to whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK HULSMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Exercisers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in an apparatus for promotin g physical culture, and relates more particularly to that class of inventions known as exercising-machines.
The invention has for its object the provision of novel means whereby the muscles of the neck maybe developed and strengthened. Furthermore, the apparatus may be advantageously employed to develop the chest and the muscles of the arms.
The invention has for its further object to design an apparatus of the above-referred-to class that will be strong, durable, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
The invention has for its still further object to provide means whereby the apparatus may be conveniently attached to almost any fixed object that may be convenient.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construc tion, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like figures of reference indicate similar parts throughout both views of the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved exercising-machine. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
In the drawings, 1 indicates a band composed of fabric carrying on its free end a keeper 2 and forminga loop 3. The band is further provided at its other end with a keeper 4, which is adapted to engage rubber tubes 5 5. Said tubes maybe made of any elastic material, the ends of which engage eyelets 6 6 of the forked wire 7 7, forming the handles 8 8.
In the use of strap 1, having keepers or stirrups 2 4 secured thereto at its respective ends, it will be seen that the loop 3 thereof, formed by passing it through one of said keepers or stirrups, is capable of being readily enlarged or contracted according to the fixture or point to which it may be found convenient to attach it. Besides the loop 3 being thus rendered adjustable in size, it is adapted to accommodate the head of the party using the machine, as will be readily appreciated. It is also observed that by reason of theconstruction of this device it is convertible in its use, being adapted both for exercising or developing the muscles of the body and of the neck.
The operation of the device is as follows: When it is desired to develop the muscles of the arms and develop the chest, the loop 3 is slipped over a stationary object, the handles are grasped and the arms exercised in the well-known manner. The elastic material forming a yielding connection serves to afford means for accomplishing this purpose. If it is desired to exercise the muscles of the neck, the handles are fastened to a stationary object and the loop 3 of the band passed around the head of the operator. The head may then be moved from side to side, the rubber tubes forming a yieldingconnection, as described above.
It will be 'seen that a great advantage is obtainedby the use of my improved apparatus, as certain muscles in the body may be strengthened and developed by the proper application of the above-described apparatus.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction of my improved apparatus without departing from the general spirit of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The exercising-machine, composed of a In testimony that I claim the foregoing I band havingkeepers or stirrups secured to its hereunto affix my signature this 23d day of 10 respective ends and itself looped through one January, A. D. 1895. of said keepers, an elastic tube or section a 5 passed through the otherkeeperorstirrup and IR'DDLRIGK HULSMANN' connected to said strap, and the handles con- In presence of nected by the forked connection to said elas- .IAS. J. MCAFEE, tic section or tube, substantially as set forth. W. IV. SEIDEL.
