HENRY V. SlVAN, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
DECORATIVE ATTACHMENT FOR CYCLE-=WHEELS.
SPEOTFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,400, dated February 11, 1896. 0 Application filed September 10, 1895. Serial No. 562,09 7. (lTo model.)
To all whom it may concerm Be it known that I, HENRY V. SWAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Decorative Attachments for Cycle-Wheels, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to a decorative attachment for cycle-wheels, and the object of the same is to provide means for decorating or ornamenting cycle or other wheels for use in parades, processions, or other displays where a wheel is to be decorated and made attractive and pleasing.
My invention consists of a decorative attachment for cycle-wheels which is provided with suitable fastening devices whereby the same may be retained between the spokes of the wheel. The means for securing the attachment within the wheel consists of clips or other devices which are applied onto the hub of the wheel, and catches or other fastening devices which are applied to the outer ends of the spokes, aswillbe fully described hereinafter and then particularly claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved attachment for cycle-wheels. Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-section on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a cycle-wheel to which my deco- I Fig. at is a vertical section on line 4 4, Fig. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail of the hub of the wheel, showing the clips at the inner ends of the ribs of the decorative attachment, which clips are applied to the hub; and Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail showing a spacing device for centering the attachment within the wheel.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A indicates a webbing, which may consist of tissue-paper, silk or any other ornamental or variously-colored fabric, and which is cut similarly to that of the webbing of a fan, said webbing being reinforced by ribs B, which are not pivoted to- .gether at their inner ends, as in a fan, but are disconnected, said inner ends being provided with projecting open wire clips 0, which are adapted to be sprung over and embrace the hub of the wheel. The ends of the clips at the open parts of the same are preferably turned outwardly, so that the same may be readily pressed over and engaged onto the hub. The outer or end ribs of the attachmentare provided at their outer ends with suitable catches or other fastening devices I) b, which are adapted to engage the spokes of the wheel. A flexible or elastic cord or string D connects the outer ends of the ribs, so that thereby the webbing which lies between the ribs is supported when the attachment is opened out into annular form within the wheel. Pivoted to the inner ends of the outer ribs are spacers or centering devices E, the inner end of each of which is provided with a heel-projection e that is adapted to abut against the flat surface of the rib when the spacer is raised into horizontal position, while the outer ends of the spacers are provided with lateral U-shaped or semicircular yokes e that engage the hub of the wheel.
My invention is applied to a bicycle or other wheel as follows: The attachment being folded in the form shown in Fig. 1, it is inserted between the spokes of thewheel and the clips or other fastening devices 0 at the inner ends of the ribs sprung over and caused to engage the hub of the wheel, while the spacers E are swung into horizontal position and, by their yokes 6, also caused to engage the hub. One of the catches b b is caught onto the outer end of one of the wheel-spokes and the webbing is now distended and the ribsB separated or spread into the annular form shown in Fig. 3, so that the other one of the catches or other fasteningsb b can be engaged with an adjacent spoke of the wheel. The attachment will now be properly centered on the Wheel by means of the spacers E, which abut against the hub-flanges and will be supported between the spokes by means of the same, in connection with the clips 0, which engage over the hub, and also by means of the fastening devices I) b. The webbing may, instead of being made in plain, circular, or annular form shown, be made so that the attachment when applied to the wheel will assume various shapes, such as a star shape, rectangular, octagonal, or other shape.
It is evident that instead of employing a webbing (which forms an ornament) the same may be omitted and ornaments of various kinds attached to the ribs, or instead of all attaching the same to the hub, and with fas-' tenings near the outer part of the same for securing it to the spokes, substantially as set forth. I
2. A decorative attachment for cyclewheels, consisting of a series of folding ribs, flexible ornamental means for connecting the ribs, and means for attaching the same between the spokes of the wheel, substantially as set forth.
3. A decorative attachment for cycle-wheels, consisting of a series of folding ribs, a continuous webbing applied to the ribs, means for applying the ribs to the hub of the wheel, and fastening devices at the outer ends of the end ribs, substantially as set forth.
4:. A decorative attachment for cycle-wheels, consisting of a series of ribs provided with an ornament, a flexible cord connectin g the outer ends of the ribs, means at the inner ends of the ribs for applying the same to the hub of the wheel, and fastening devices for securing the attachment to the spokes, substantially as set forth.
5. A decorative attachment for cycle-wheels, provided with means for securing the same between the spokes, and with hinged spacers or centering devices, at each side of the inner part of the attachment, for engaging the flanges of the hub, whereby the attachment is centered between the spokes, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed myname in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY V. SWAN.
