BUNG ATTACHMENT FOR BARRELS.
SPECIFIATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,316, dated July 9, 1895. Application tiled November 30, 1894. Serial No. 530,353. (No modell) llo all whom, t 'may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK SCHEIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the countyot Milwaukee and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Bung Attachments for Barrels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to that class of bung attachments yfor use on kegs'and barrels for beer and other liquids which are forced out of said barrels by means of air-pressure; and it consists of the several parts hereinafter fully set forth and described. A
The object of myimprovementisto provide an attachment for the purpose designated, which is easy and rapid in operation and lessens the liability of injuring the barrel. `Heretofore it has been necessary to force in the plug or cork with a hammer or mallet, which operation often disables the barrel, and to usea wrench to x the tube in place; but with `my device no mallet and wrench are employed and the parts surrounding the bung-hole are at all times protected.
That my invention may vbe seen and fully understood by others reference will be had to the following specification and annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which-- Figure 1 is a front view of my attachment complete, the cap being in section; Fig. 2, a side view of the holder detached from the bung-plate without the cap; Fig. 3, atop viewof the bung-plate; Fig. 4, a side view of said plate; Fig. 5, a sectional view ot' the same on the bushing 2, near the base, is the annular shoulder 4, below which appears the hole 4' to receive the plug or cork. On the interior of the plate 1, centrally located near the top, is the annular shoulder 5, for the purpose hereinafter explained. Between the shoulders 4 and 5 is the annular chamber 2a, opening through the top of the plate 1 and into the `hole 4a below. Each side of the opening through thev center ofthe plate 1 is the T- opening 6, extending entirely through said plate, the stem of said T-opening being undercut the same Width as the cross portion. Projecting beyond each side of the plate 1 are the ears .7 7, and the opposite ears 7 are connected by the grooves 8 8, which extend across the top of said plate, front and back. The ears 7 and the grooves 8 are for the purpose of receiving and holding the rubber bands which are employed to retain the stam p in place in case the same should become unglued.
The holder 9 is cylindricalv in its general form, externally screw-threaded at the top, and has the passage l0 extending entirely through the same.
Below the upper threaded end of the holder 9 is the externally-enlarged portion W, from which projects the nipple 11 at the rear,hav ing an internal passage connecting with the passage l0 at'right angles.' The nipple 1l may be threaded externally, as shown, internally, or not at all, and has connected therewith, when the device is in use, the end of a pipe (not shown in the drawings) leading to an air-pump. Extending from the sides ot' the enlarged portionv9L are'the trunnions 12 l2, to which the bifurcated lever 13 is pivoted. The lever 13 terminates in front in the handle 13a. To the ends 13b 13b ott-he lever 13, above or back of the trunnions 12, according to the position of said lever, are pivoted the upper ends of the uprights 14 14. The uprights 14 are connected by the curved band 15 alittle below the center and back of the holder 9, and said uprights terminate at their bases in the lugs 16, which project bothy sides of each of said uprights. The lugs 16 are of the Aright length to enter the crosses of the T-openings 6, and the thickness of the uprights 14 corresponds with the width of the stems of said openings. The holder 9 is provided with the base 9b and the ange 9, the latter being situated at the.A junction of said base and the main part of said holder. The diameter of the holder-base 9b is a little less IOO than that of the bung-plate chamber 2n. The washer 17, of rubber or other suitable yield ing material, encircles the base 9b below the flange 90.
The cap 18 has the internal threaded opening 19, the shoulder 18a encircling an opening through the top of said cap and the handles 18" 18". The washer 20, of rubber or other suitable yielding material, rests against the under side of the shoulder 18% The operation of my" device is as follows: Supposing the plate 1 to be in place in the bung-hole of the barrel 3, as shown in Fig. 6, and a cork seated in the hole 4, elevate the lever 13, insert the lower ends of the nprigh ts 14 in the bung-plate Topenings 6 and the base 9b of the holder 9 into the upper part of the chamber 2, with the washer17 resting on the shoulder 5. Now press down the lever 13 by means of the handle 13, andthe uprights 14 are drawn upward with their lugs 16 beneath the edges of the stems of the T-openings 6, since said uprights and said stems are centrally located, and the holderfiange 9C crowds down upon the washer 17, thus forming a tight joint between the holder 9 and the plate 1. W'hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with an attachment for barrels, a holder flanged near the bottom and having a central vertical passage and a horizontal connecting passage opening through a t nipple, trunnions extending from said holder, a yielding washer below the flange on said holder, a bifurcated lever pivoted to said trunnions, uprights pivoted to the free ends of` said lever and connected by a band, and latl It will now be readily seen that by forcing air through the nipple 1l into the barrel 3 (which can be done, since the tube 2l is l said holder near said threaded end, a yielding washer below said flange, a biturcated lever pivoted to said trunnions, uprights pivoted to the free ends of said lever and connected by a band, lateral lugs at the bases of said uprights, an internally threaded and shouldered cap adapted to engage the threaded end of said holder, and a yielding washer below the shoulder in said cap, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with an attachment for barrels, a bung-plate having a depending bushing internally chambered and shouldered and adapted to engage the bung-hole of a barrel, lateral T-openings in said plate, and laterally extending'ears on said plat'e connected by upper surface grooves, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In an attachment for barrels, a bungplate having a depending bushing internally chambered and shouldered and adapted to be secured to the bung-hole ot` a barrel, and lateral T-openings in said plate, in combination with a flanged holder having a central vertical passage and a horizontal connecting passage opening through a nipple, said holder' provided with a base adapted to enter the upper part of the chamber in said bung-plate bushing, a yielding washer arranged below the flange ot' said holder to form a tight joint between said plate and holder, a bifurcated lever trunnioned to said holder and uprights connected by a band pivoted to the free end ot' said lever having lugs adapted to enter said T-openings and form a secure connection with said plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination, in an attachment for barrels, of a bung-plate having a depending bushing internally chambered and shouldered and adapted to be secured in the bung-hole of a barrel, and lateral T-openings in said plate; a flanged holder externally threaded atthe top having a vertical passage and a horizontal connecting passage opening through a nipple, said holder provided with a basc adapted to enter the upper part of the chamber in said bungplate bushing, and a yielding washer arranged below the flange of said holderl to form a tight joint between said plate and holder, a bifurcated lever trunnioned to said holder, uprights connected by a band pivoted to the free ends of said lever having lugs adapted to enter said T-openings and form a secure connection with said plate, and an internally threaded and shouldered cap adapted to engage the threaded end ot said holder, with a yielding washer below the shoulder iu said cap arranged to snugly embrace a tube when said cap is screwed down,
