J. E. FLUKE. BORING BAR.
No. 544,250. Patented Aug. 6, 1895.
avwe/wtoz NITED TATES PAT T OF ICE.
JOSEPH E. FLUKE, OF OOVINGTON, KENTUCKY.
BORING-BAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,250, dated August 6, 1895.
Application filed March 28, 1895.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. FLUKE, residing at Oovington, in the county of Kenton and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boring-Bars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in boring-bars for boring hubs or pulleys, carwheels, and similar articles. It is also adapted to be used with any ordinary lathe or drill. Its object is to provide positive, accurate, and convenient means'for adjusting the cuttingbars to the required positions.
The features of my invention will be more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, making apart of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved boring-bar. Fig. 2 is a section through the same on line mac, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the traveling adjusting-head. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the screw-bar journal-plate. Fig.
6 is a perspective view of a sleeve for covering the boring-bar.
A represents the boring-bar, which is secured to the chuck of a lathe or drill-press by means of the tapered shank a.
B B represent the'cutters, which areseated in a slot 0 in the boring-bar and project there-' from upon opposite sides of the bar, the inner or meeting ends of said cutters being beveled orinclined, as shown in Fig. 3. At right angles to slot 0 and intersecting a portion of it is a second slot D, in which is mounted atravcling head E.
F represents a screw-threaded shaft tapping the head E and provided at one end with a wrench-seat e, by means of which the screwshaft is revolved to feed the head E backward and forward. The screw-shaft F is .journaled in a plate G set in a recess in the side of the boring-bar, preferably in the following manner: The screw-shaft is provided with a head Serial No. 543,557. (No model.)
1, connected to the body of the shaft by a neck 2. I
3 represents an opening through plate G for the passage of head 1. I
p 4 represents a recess in which the head rests, and 5 a slot to receive the neck 2.
The traveling head E is provided with a wedge-shaped engaging-plate H, which engages the inner faces of the cutters, as seen in Fig. 3, and adjusts them radially to the desired position, where they are rigidly clamped by set-screws I I.
By the means herein described I am en abled to secure an accurate, positive, and uniform adjustment of the cutters, which is not interfered with by chips or foreign matter which may lodge in the slots or openings in the bar.
In order to effectually prevent the dust, grit, sand, &c., from entering the slot D and coming into contact with the working parts of the adjusting devices, I provide sleeve K, which slips on over the boring-bar. Said sleeve K is providedwith two recesses K for the receptionof the cutters upon which the sleeve rests.
I claim- 1. In a boring-bar provided with intersecting slots 0, D, the combination of the cutters B, B, seated in one of said slots, a traveling head E, seated in the remaining slot and car- .r in wed e sha ed en a in" late interb p D b p posed between the inner edges of the cutters, and a screw threaded shaft swiveled to the boring-bar and tapping the traveling head, substantially as specified.
2. In a boring-bar employing radial cutters seated in a slot thereof, the combination with said cutters of the head E, the wedge H, the adjusting screw F tapping said head and swiveling in the bar whereby said wedge is adjusted radially in its slot, substantially as specified.
3. In a boring-bar the cutter adjusting dehead whereby the latter is moved, a slotted plate secured to the boring-bar and serving as ajournal for one end of said screw, and a 15 wrench seat formed upon the opposite end of the screw, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set vices, consisting of the head E, the Wedge H, and the screw F swiveled in plate G secured to the boring-bar, and having the Wrench seat e upon the opposite side of the boringbar, substantially as specified.
&. In a boring-bar provided with intersecting slots, the combination with the cutters my hand.
freely mounted in one of said slots, of a travv cling head mounted in the other slot, and JOSEPH FLUKE carrying a wedge which enters between the Witnesses:
cutters whereby they are adjusted longitudi- V. R. 00D,
