SAFETY PIN.

WITNESSES INVENTQRI q GQMQ 5M awm UNITED STATES PAT NT OF icE.
GEORGE D. NICHOLS, OF NEW CANAAN, CONNECTICUT.
SAFETY-PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,243, dated January 8, 1 895. Application filed June 23, 1894:. Serial No. 515, 481- (N model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE D. NICHOLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Canaan, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Pins; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to simplify and cheapen the construction of safety pins of the class used for garment supporters and similar purposes; the object of course in devices of this class being to reduce the cost of construction to the lowest possible limit without impairing the strength or efficiency of the article.
My improved safety pin consists of two parts, one of which is made of wire, the other of brass, and which are firmly and rigidly secured together without additional attaching devices, and either by machine or by hand.
In order to accomplish the desired results I have devised the novel construction of which the following description in connection with the accompanying drawings is a specification, numbers and letters being used to designate the several parts.
Figure l is an elevation of my novel safety pin complete, the pin being in the engaged position; Fig. 2, a view of the blank which constitutes the holding plate and retaining guard, and Fig. 3 is a view of the pin and attaching arm.
1 denotes the pin, 2 the coil which constitutes the spring, 3 the attaching arm and 4 an angle piece on said arm, these parts all being formed from a single piece of wire.
A denotes the attaching plate as a whole.
for the attachment of the web, with lugs 6 which are adapted to be closed about the attaching arm, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, with a lug 7 which is adapted to be closed about the angle piece as clearly shown in Fig. 1 and with a portion 8 which is adapted to be curved over and when the parts are assembled constitutes the retaining guard for the point of the pin as is also clearly shown in Fig. 1. It will be seen that when lugs 6 are closed about the attaching arm and lug 7 is closed about the angle arm the two parts of the device will be securely and rigidly attached together.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A 'safetypin of the character described, consisting of a pin having an attaching arm 3 bent at its'extremity to form the angle piece 4, and an attaching plate A having the usual web receiving openings and '-having a series of lugs 6 adapted to embrace the arm 3 of the pin, and also provided at one side with an outwardly and downwardly exte'nding arm having a lug 7 adapted to engage the bent extremity 4 of the pin thereby rigidly securing the same to said plate, and a lug 8 lying in the path of the point of the pin and serving as a retaining guard therefor, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE D. NICHOLS.
