Description
(No Model.) Q
A.' NITTINGER, SI. COMBINED GANDLESTIGK AND MATCH BOX.
. No.531,467. 7 Patented Dec. 25,1894..
1 II I IIIIIIIIIIIIII NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE...
AUGUST NITTINGER, SR, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED CANDLESTICK AND MATCH-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,467, dated December 25,1894.
Application filed March 2, 1894- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST NITTINGER, Sn, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Candlestick and Match-Box, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification. and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of acombined candle stick and match box, the same embodying a novel construction of said parts, and novel means for suspending and carrying the device, as will be hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims. I
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a combined candle stick and match box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section on line 0c, 00, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate'corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to'the drawings: A designates a match box, connected with which'is a socket or candle stick B formed of upright plates having recesses in their upper ends forming a socket. On the back of the match box is an ear 0, to which is attached the handle D, the upper end whereof is formed with aspur E. Projecting rearward from the match box are spurs F which flare and extend in horizontal direction.
In the present case, the match box and candle stick are cast in one piece, it being noticed that the rim G and base A of the candle stick is continuous of the sides'H and base A of the match box, the ear 0 and spurs F being also cast with the matchbox, thus producing a strong, light and inexpensive construction of the several parts in one. The handle D is formed with screw-threads as at V J, for firmly securing it to the ear 0.
The front end of the lid K of the match .box has a flange L, which covers the joint befrom entering the match box.
The handle D is constructed of a piece of heavy wire, orlight round iron, or a rod which is bent for a portion of its length, producing an eye M, and having its upper end bent or Serial No. 502,083. (No model.)
sharpened, forming the spur E, it being noticed that said eye M provides means for application of a finger for conveniently carrying the device.
Should it be desired to hang up the device, especially the candle stick, the spur E is slightly driven into a wall or beam, and the spurs F rest against said beam or wall, whereby the device is preventedfrom dropping and swaying, as is evident, and so surely retains its position. On the side of the match box is a match-striking surface N, which however may be located on any other suitable portion of the box.
The spurs F lengthen and widen the base of the device, and prevent overturning of the latter.
Rising from the rear corners of the match box are ears N to which is secured the rod P, the latter forming the bearings for the lid K and also serving to prevent springing or spreading of said ears.
- Having thus described my inventi0n,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A combined candle stick and match box consisting of a base and a rim with a partition, ears rising from said base, a lid journaled in said ears and having a flange embracing said partition, a candle socket rising from said base in front of said partition, a handle secured to said base having a spur at its upper end, and spurs connected with the rear portion of the base, said parts being combined substantially as described.
2. A combined candle stick and match box,
consisting of a base with a rim and a partition, ears rising from said base at the rear end of the sides thereof,a lid having journal bearings in said ears, flaring spurs connected with the rear of the match box portion, and a handle secured to an ear at rear of said match box portion and provided with a spur at its upper end, and an eye intermediate of its ends, said parts being combined substantially as described.
AUGUST NITTINGER, SR.
