To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY. W. VAIL, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing atlndustry, in the county of McDonough and State of Illinois, have invented a new and'useful Wire Fence, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in fences, of the class constructed of wire and consisting of spaced strands or runners and intersecting stays; and the objects in View are to provide a construction adapted for turning or resisting the attacks of both small and large animals; and to provide means for preventing injury thereto bycattle in reaching over or through the same.

Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the'novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In the drawings:Figure 1 is a view of a fence constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of one of the ties for connecting the runners and stays. Fig.3 is a similar view of the short or jointed stays for connecting the upper runners. Fig. 4 is a slightly modified form of jointed stays.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding partsin all the figures of the drawings.

1 designates the longitudinal strands or runners and 2 the transversely disposed stays by which the strands or runners are connected. These stays each comprise a lower continuous portion or member 3, which intersects and is attached to the lower strands or runners, and a jointed upper portion or member 4, which intersects and is attached to the upper strands or runners. This upper portion or member of the stay consists of a series of parts 5 provided with terminal eyes 6 which are engaged with and are adapted to slide upon the straight body-portions of the parts,whereby when cattle attempt to reach through or over the fence the strands or runners yield and then return to their normal position, thus avoiding the bending which results when the stays are continuous to the top of the fence.

The means for securing the stays to the runners consist of ties 7, arranged at the intersections of said parts, and each tie oomprises two lashings 8 and 9, consisting of ends with the stay above and below the runner, thus crossing the runner, and the lashing-loop 9 is engaged at its ends with the runner at opposite sides of the stay, thus crossing the stay. This guards against displacement of -the parts by either a vertical or a horizontal strain, and avoids the use of an unnecessary amount of wire.

From the above description it will be seen that the construction of the improved fence is simple, that it may be readily and quickly erected, and that when in place the lower portion thereof is sufficiently rigid to resist the attacks of small stock and prevent them from passing through and the upper runners are connected or stayed in such a manner as to allow them to yield readily when pressed upward or downward whereby permanent injury to the structure is avoided.

It will be understood,furthermore, that various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Having thus described my invention, I claim In a fence, the combination of horizontal strands or runners, intersecting stays, said stays and runners being provided at their points of intersection with bends or bows, and ties arranged at these intersections and consisting of lashing-loops 8 engaged at their ends with the stays above and below the runners and crossing the latter and lashing-loops 9 engaged at their ends with the runners upon opposite sides of the stays and intersecting the latter,.substantially'as specified.
