Be it known that I, FLETCHER M. HAWKINS, a citizen of the 'United States, residing at- Scotland, in the county of Van Buren and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Monuments, and

particularly an improvement in my monumentpatented March 29, 1892, No.47l,758-; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same;

My invention is an improvement in monuments, and particularly in my monument patented by the United States Patent Office, March 29, 1892, and numbered 471,758, and consists in constructing the frame to hold two plate glasses instead of one, so that the monument may face two ways and of so padding the glasses With cushions as to render them not liable to break, and to leave between the glasses an air cushion, as hereinafter described andset out in this specification and the claim hereto attached.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a face view of my monument set in a base. Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 are detail views.

The body of my monument represents a leaf with a stem inserted in a proper base. It is preferably made of cast iron but may be made of any material.

The body of the monument is made of two parts a and b. The part a, is provided on its inner edge with a groove at, having at its upper end a socket a vided on its inner curved edge with a groove a corresponding to groove a; and on its upper end is a tongue at, and a horn a adapted to fit in the groove 0., and socket a of the part a. The lower end or stem of said part is provided with a tongue at", adapted to fit into the groove a, of the lower end or stem of the part a. In the grooves a. and a are The part b, is profitted two plates of plate glass 0 and c. Said glasses are provided with cushions d, preferably of rubber. Said cushions are bent in the form of an M, the V-part e, fitting between the glass plates and the stems 6, overlapping the edges and fitting on the outer faces of said glasses.- (See Figs.4 and 5.) In Fig. 5, the glasses are represented wide apart in order to show the position of the pads. It will be seen that the construction of the pads leaves between the two glasses a space which is intended tobe filled first with some material on which may be written or represented words or figures, or both, to perpetuate the memory of the deceased, or the wordsor figures may be written on or worked into the glass; and next, the said space is to be filled with air through the perforation f,

in part b, and when so filled said perforationmay be closed, thus making an air cushion, or said perforation may be left open at the will of the manufacturer or the party using the monument.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
