GOTTLIEB tWILKENING, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
; GAMING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,107, dated May 14, 1895.
Application filed November 12, 1394- Serlal No. 528,488. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GOTTLIEB WILKENING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gaming Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a gaming device for the amusement of children, the features of which will be fully hereinafter described and claimed. I I
The objects of my device are to amuse and instruct children in the matter of counting,
. and in the directions of the compass,'the
the device.
The circular'base A is provided with the raised rim A, and on its upper surface are two series of cavities concentric to the device. The outer series is numbered from one to eight, and the inner from nine to sixteen. These cavities are of sufficient size to form a lodgment for an ordinary marble. The number of cavities may be increased or diminished, and arranged or numbered variously. The margin of the base may be marked 01f into three hundred and sixty degrees, the top marked N. for north, the bottom S. for south, the right hand E. for east and the left hand W. for west. When a marble falls into one of the cavities its numerical value may be given, also its relation to the cardinal points of the compass expressed in degrees or otherwise.
In the center of the base is the hub or standard E, whichcomprises the shoulder on which rests the plate D, and on the top is the spindle which engages an orifice of the axle C and about which it freely turns. This axle is supported on the wheels B B which traverse the rim; and for the purpose of giving motion to the device, the knobs 0 on both ends of the axle are grasped and revolutions are given.
I On the inner surface of the left wheelnot shown in Fig. 1is attached the trip B com-- prisingthe straight surface 20 at a right angle to a radial line, and the leg 21, which extends beyond the periphery of the wheel in a radial line. In revolving the wheel, the plain surface engages the end of the lever G and thereby depresses it. This lever is pivoted above the axle and its inner end engages the slot 23 of the sliding-block E, which is held in a mortise of the axle.
The arresting lug 22 holds the sliding-block at such a position, that the marble s-indicated by circular dotted lines-will drop into the notch 24 in the incline 0 When the lever is depressed by the movement of the Wheel the marble is discharged from the notch, it rolls down the incline, strikes the bell J held on the axle, drops to the base and finally settles into one of the cavities. The lever G is partially cut away to show a hole for the pin 25, which when entered, would hold the outer end of the lever down, free from engagement with the wheel, and then the marble would not be discharged.
Another device for discharging a marble comprises the plate D held on a shoulder of the standard E, and which has arms in which are oblong slots, into which a marble would rest.
The standard I is attached to the base, and in this is pivoted the lever H. The rounded --end enters slightly the oblong orifice in said plate, and when the outer end of said lever is depressed by the projection 21 of the trip, the marble is displaced and falls onto the base and enters one of the cavities thereof. Each of the arms may be provided with a like dis- ICO and about the axle, is by theside boards 0, the near one being removed in Fig; 2,.to exhibit the internal parts.
0 is the upper incline and (J the lower.
The operation of the device is thus: A marble or marbles are placed on theupper incline, they roll down, strike the lower incline and lodge in the notch of the same. At each revolution of the wheel the lever G is depressed. This carries up a marble, and it rolls down the incline, strikes the bell, falls onto the base and settles in one of the numbered marble at each revolution of the trip-wheel, but in the lower, a large number of revolutions might be required.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device adapted to play games the combination of the circular base, with cavities on its face, provided with the central standard and the marginal rim for a track, the supporting wheels one of which is provided with a trip, the axle pivoted on said standard, the upper incline, the notched lower incline, the discharging slide and its lever engaged by said trip, substantially as described.
2. In a device adapted to play games the combination. of the circular base, with numbered cavities, provided with the central standard and the marginal rim for a track,
the supporting wheels adapted to revolve on said track, the trip attachedto one of said wheels, theaxle pivoted to said standard, the
holding plate and discharging lever, substantially as described.
In testi'monythat I claim the foregoing as my own I affix mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
