METALLIC IESSEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,070, dated March 5, 1895.
Application filed July 21, 1894.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, J AMES R. MOLAUGH- LIN and THOMAS W. MARTIN, of Clifton Springs, in the county of Ontario, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Vessels; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
Our present invention has for its obj ects'to provide an improved metallic vessel, particularly for containing cream or milk, and adapted to remain in water for a greater or less time for cooling the contents, without rusting, and it consists in theimproved construction hereinatter described and claimed.
The drawing shows a sectional View of a creamcan constructed in accordance with our invention, 1 indicating the cylindrical body, of tin or tinned iron, preferably provided with a loose cover 2, bail-ears 3, and the bail 4. The lower end of the can-body 1 is formed with a flange 9, and the can-bottom is composed of two plates, the inner plate 5 being composed of tin and having the depending flange fitting the interior of the can-body, and also the short outwardly extending flange 6, shorter than the flange 9, and resting against it, and the outer plate 7 is composed of zinc and fits tightly against the plate 5 and has at the bottom edge the flange 8, longer than the flange 6, and which is spun or bent around, as shown, and turned over in contact with the upper side of the flange 9, thereby holding the composite bottom in place. This construction of cream-can we find is simple and cheap, and moreover by reason of the wellknown electrical action of the tinned iron and zinc, which are in contact in the water, the rusting out of the bottoms and sides of the can is eftectually prevented, and also the bottom being recessed and lined with zinc and the depending supporting flange resting in contact with the bottom of the tank or other support being of zinc as Well, there is no liability of the tin covering being worn off and exposing the iron to the direct corroding action of the water.
The practical utility and anti-rusting qualities of a cream-can constructed in accordance with our invention we have demonstrated by extensive practical use.
The seams inside or outside of the can bottom may be soldered or not, depending upon JAMES. R. MQLAUGHLIN. THOMAS W. MARTIN.
