BUCKLE AND SNAP.
Patented Dec. 19, 1893.

UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. PUGH, or OARTHAGE, omo.
BUCKLE AND SNAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,310, dated December 19, 1893.
Application filed August 10, 1891. Serial No. 402,191. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. PUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oarthage, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in buckles and other fastening devices.
The object of my invention is to devise a buckle and other fastening devices with a construction which will permit of straps or similar things being secured thereto without the use of thread, rivets or any other fastening means.
The invention consists of a'frame or body, part of such device having a rectangular form and a clamp pivoted within the said frame in a manner to clamp and secure a strap or like constructed in common therewith.
The same numbers refer to the same parts in different figures.
1 is the frame of the device and having the buckle in common in Figs. 1 and 2.
2 is a cross-bar with which the tongue 3 is made integral and which is pivoted at its ends in the side parts of the frame 1.
6 is a flat back end cross-bar of the body 1, and 7 is a round cross-bar adjacent the latter.
5 is a clamp pivoted within and to the frame body 1 by the pivot 4t, and may be turned about the pivot 4: when inserting and securing the end of the strap 8. When there is no strap connected to the device and it is held horizontal, as shown in Fig. 2, the long part of the clamp 5 will hang downward when the end of a strap may be passed through the slot between the end bars 6, 7, of the body 1 over the short end of the clamp 5, and down between the clamp and the cross-bar 2 of the buckle, and then passed backward and through the slot between the bars 6, 7, sufficiently to be held in that position. The strap is then pulled away from the buckle and the clamp drawn up into the position shown in the figures. The space between the buckle, crossbar 2 and the adjacent end of the clamp 5 is less than the thickness of any strap used, so that the end of the clamp will bind the strap against the cross-bar 2, and when the strap is drawn tight into the position shown in the figures, it will be held securely. Every pull .upon the strap 8 will serve to tighten and more fully secure the strap in place in this fastening device.
Fig. 3 shows a modification of a fastening device having the same clamp arrangement as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In Fig. 3, 10 is the body of a snap-hook, 11 the hook, 12 the spring guard and 13 a screw by which the guard is secured to the body of the hook.
The clamp device shown and described is adapted for use in various fastening devices and hence the invention is not limited to those shown and described.
What I claim is-' In a strap fastener, the combination of a device located at one end for making a connection in any desired manner, and of the following device, viz: a frame 1 having a central opening, and a cross-bar 2 located at one end of the opening, and a cross-bar 7 located at the other end of said opening, and an oscillating lever clamp 5 located in the said opening and pivotally f ulcrumed at 4 to the frame, the width of the space between the forward cross-bar 2 and the forward end of lever 5 when approximated thereto being less than the thickness of the strap to be locked therein,
the device being further provided with a crossbar 6, to the rear of the lever 5, and opposite to the cross-bar 7, whereby a slot or opening is present between said cross-bars 6 and 7,
substantially as and for the purposesspecified. In testimony whereof I now affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. PUGH.

EDWARD P. ROBBINS, O. O. WARRINGTON.
