To all whom it may concern..-

Be it known that we, JoHN'H. SHAFFER and EMIL HOROVSKY, both residents of Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Label-Holders; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, thereof.

Our invention relates to what might be termed label holders, that is, a certain device for holding and locking therein checks or cards-which bear some number or mark to designate to whom the article to which such device is applied belongs.

i In certain kinds of business where the own inodity dealt in is put up in cases, crates, kegs, 820., whose cost of manufacture is a large item of expense, but which are adapted to be used again and again upon being refilled, it is customary for the manufacturer to redeem such cases, crates, kegs, &c., when emptied of their contents. In sending out the cases, crates, kegs, &G., it is desirable to have some number or mark on them so that when they are returned empty credit can be given on same to the proper parties, and also in case they go astray some means will be had of distinguishing them from others of the same character. Any kind of a number or mark which is exposed to view on such cases, crates, kegs, (be, is liable to be defaced by the rough handling which they rcceivein transportation, and for the further reason that in course of shipment they are exposed at railway stations to all kinds of weather. Unless,therefore, some substantial protection is given to the numbers or marks they soon lose their effect and much inconvenience is experienced in not being able to keep a record of the cases, crates, kegs, &c.,and in not being able to credit the proper parties on the return of same empty.

Our invention consists in a label holder having a bolt or traveler having a recess adapted to receive a card or check, a tumbler engaging with such traveler, said tumbler being formed of magnetizable material, and a magnet for withdrawing the tumbler from engagement with the traveler to release the same. 7

The invention consists further in certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth and claimed.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in wl1ich- Figure 1 is a view of the top of a keg with our improved-labelholder applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlar ed vertical section of our improved label holder with the tu mblerdrawn. Fig. 3 is a like viewwith the tumbler engaging with the bolt. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the bolt. l/Ve have illustrated our invention as applied to a keg for the purposes hereinbefore set forth, and as the head of the keg is acouvenient place for the insertion of our label holder, we have shown it in such position.

The shell or casing A, which is adapted to receive the bolt, is composed of the exteriorly threaded collar or thiinble a to which is secured the bottom plate 1). The said collar or thimble is formed with the outwardly extending flange c, and within said collar or thimble a. are formed the recesses or seats d and 6. Within the recess 6 is the upright spring rod f, the lower end of said rod being secured to the collar (a The spring rod f extends up slightly beyond the upper rim of said collar a, and possesses sufficient resiliency to enable it to resume its normal position with reference to said recess c after the force exerted to draw it from its normal position has been removed. The bolt 9 rests within the shell or casing, said bolt having the lugs 72. formed thereon adapted to enter the seats cl in the collar or thimble a, whereby said bolt is prevented from turning therein. A recess 2' is formed in the bolt g, said recess being of sufficientdepth to receive a card or check 70 of suitable size. The said bolt g is further provided with the seat Z adapted to receive the tumbler 111. when locked. Interposed between the base plate Z) of the shell and the bolt 9 is the spring a adapted to force said bolt normally out. The tumbler m is formed of steel, or like metal subject to attraction by a magnet, and is provided with the opening 0. Through this opening 0 the spring rod f passes, the effect of said upright rod being to retain said tumbler normally in engagement with the seat Z in the bolt g. Thecasing A is formed with the seat 1) for the reception of said tumbler m. 1

When our label holder is employed in con nection with a keg, as above set forth, the threaded thimble a engages with a threaded seat formed in the head of the key. By means of applying a magnet of suificient magnetic power, such as shown in Fig. 9, to the exposed end of the tumbler m, the said tumbler being attracted thereby is withdrawn, overcoming the resistance of'the spring rod f. Upon the withdrawal of the tumbler m from engagement with the seat Z, the springn acts to force out the bolt g until the recess 2' is exposed to view. The lugs h on said bolt g coming in contact with the inner face of the flange o prevent the further escape of the bolt g from the shell or casing. A check or card hearing some number or mark to designate the consignee is then inserted within the recess 1', when by applying suflicient' pressure'to the bolt g it isforced back into its normal position, when the tumbler m is then free to engage again with the seat Z in said bolt. The card or check 70 is thus secreted away from view within the bolt g, and all liability of its defacement or its being tampered with is re moved. When the keg is returned to the manufacturer empty, by applying the magnet to the tumbler, as before, the bolt is released and the check or card removed to credit the proper party when the keg can be refilled and again sent out as before;

By the device a secure means for holding the labels, cards'or checks is provided, which has the advantage that it does not require a key-hole and access to the inner parts of the same cannot be had except in a way which would not naturally suggest itself to any person not familiar with the intended manner of opening the same.

What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a label holder, the combination with a bolt or traveler, of atumbler engaging with the traveler and locking the same, said tumbler being formed of magnetizable material, and a magnet for withdrawing the tumbler from engagement with the traveler to release the same, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In a label holder, the combination with a bolt or traveler, of a tumbler engaging with and locking the same formed of magnetizable material, said bolt having a recess formed therein for the reception of a card or check,

and a magnet for withdrawing said tumbler from engagement with the bolt to release the same, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. V

3. In a label holder, the combination with ashell or casing, of a bolt or follower adapted to slide to and fro therein, said bolt havinga recess formed therein to receive a card or check, a tumbler engaging with and looking said bolt within said shell or casing, and means for withdrawing said tumbler from engagement with said bolt to release the same and expose said recess to view, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

4.. In a label holder, the combination with a shellor casing, of a bolt or follower adapted to slide to and fro therein, a spring interposed between the bottom plate of said shell and said bolt, said bolt having a recess formed therein to receive a card or check, lugs on said bolt engaging with seats in said shell, a tumbler engaging with and locking said bolt within said shell, and means for withdrawing said tumbler from engagement with said bolt to release the same and expose said recess to view, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. In a label holder, the combination with a shell or casing, of abolt or follower adapted to slide to and fro therein, said bolt having a recess formed therein to receive a card or check, a spring rod secured within said shell, a tumbler engaged by said spring rod, said tumbler engaging with and locking said bolt within said shell, and means for withdrawing said tumbler from engagement with said bolt to release the same and expose the said recess to view, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

6. In a label holder, the combination with the shell A having the seats-d 6 formed therein, of the bolt or follower 9, said bolt or follower having the recess 11 formed therein to receive a card or check 76, the lugs h on said bolt engaging with said seats cl, the spring a, the spring rodf, the tumbler we having the opening 0 formed therein through which said spring rod f passes, said tumbler engaging with and locking said bolt in said shell, and a magnet for withdrawing said tumbler, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
