Be it known that I, SAMUEL GLENVILLE BROSIUS, of the ,city of Savannah, county of Chatham, State of Gcorgia,haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Boilers, of which the following isla fulLclear, and exact description, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to use the same.
An object of my invention is to produce a boiler in which provision is made for return ing the products of combustion through one or more ret-urn `flues whereby the full eiect of the heat of the burning gases from such combustion is passed'to the water, and producing a great economy in'the utilization of the heat, which, in boilers of the usual construct-ion, is allowed to escape, and to produce iue boxes in section.

My invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings- Figure 1 represents an end view of the due boiler with one half of the water head removed. Fig. 2 is a cross section of the boiler taken on the line y, y, Fig. l, and showing the ues and return Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6 arefrespectively, end elevations and sections of the return ue boxes, the respective sections being taken on the lines so y' and m3, ys. Fig. 7 is an end elevation showing flue box for connection of two dues.

The boiler B is provided with tire dues, F', F2, F5. Flues F receive the products of combustion directly from the furnace, through the return flue box, R', to iiue, F2, thence through return flue box, R, to tlue, F5, and so carry the said products to and fro through the said boiler while being burned and before they escape to the stack or chimney, by which means the heat of the products of oombustion is brought several times in contact with the water surrounding the tubes, and
thereby causing said products oi' combustion to give up their full heat to the surrounding water.
To the two boiler heads or lne sheets, A and D, the return due boxes are secured -by bolts b, passing through the holes b in the flange R2 of said box, to their respective boiler heads, by which means the said ilue boxes are securely bolted or riveted to said heads. rlhe said ue boxes are designated as separated return flue boxes, and are arranged to connect the flues in independent series or corresponding rows by which the products of combustion are passed through separate successive series of lines, so that there Vmay be a more equal distribution ot' the products of combustion through all the nues. The anges are provided with the holes b which may be countersunk to receive the holes of the bolts b whereby the same are protected from the heat. T represents the Walls of said ue boxes. These boxes when secured in place, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 connect a series of tlues together, so as to cause the products ot' combustion to make a circuitous route through the boiler. In the construction shown in these figures, I have connected one series of dues with another series, but, as is oovious,one flue in one row could be connected with a corresponding iue in the upper row by the box shown in Fig. 7, or the flue box R, may be divided by partitions R3, indicated in dotted lines Fig. 4f, by which means two corresponding flues can beconnected together.
H represents a groove or recess cut in the compact surface of the boxes R, so that any suitable packing as tire clay or lead, may be used to pack the said boxes tight against the boiler heads A and B. These flue boxes are each provided with caps f which when removed, attord ready access for cleaning tools to clean out the flues of the boiler, to permit access thereto for any desired purpose.
At one end ot the boiler, as shown in the Fig. 2, there is provided a water head E', which may be formed by the continuation of the boiler shell and the supplemental head E. OpeningsCare provided in the headD which induces a circulation of the water between said head and the main boiler; the said water IOC head in addition to causing a circulation also protects the return flue boxesRfrom burning out by surrounding said flue boxes with water. These boxes R may be made of any desirable material, such as iron, copper, steel or tire clay, but when under pressure, as shown between heads D and 4E, Fig. 2, should be made of suitable metal to stand the pressure in the boiler.
The arrows S S2, and S3, indicate the course of the products of combustion through the boiler, and S4 the outlet; but the order may be reversed so that F3, receives and F discharges. The fines F3 are secured to the su pplemental head E and said head is caught or secured tightly around the return flue boxes R. If desired an additional water box could be arranged in front of head A in a similar manner to that at the left hand.
The water in the jacket of the iiue boxes R may be in free communication with the boiler, or if desired the feed water may be heated on its way to the boiler by passing through said jacket.
The fine boxes R, or R may be used as found advisable, either in combination, or singly and on one or both heads, with or without the water head E. The tine boxes R are provided with water jackets E2 which is formed by the outer Wall T', and the inner wall T, thus providing a circulation chamber through which water is passed, being forced through the inlet J and discharged at outlet J I do not limit myself to the arrangements and constructions shown, as the same may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus ascertained the nature and set forth the construction of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a steam boiler, the combination with the iiue sheets and ues thereof, of a return flue box having a cap which permits access thereto, and a tiange between the walls of said box by which the said box is secured in place, substantially as set forth.
2. In a steam boiler, the combination with the flue sheets and iiues thereof, of a return iiue box having a cap which permits access thereto, a flange between the walls of said box by which thesaid box is secured in place and a water head surrounding said return flue box and thereby protecting the same, substantially as set forth.
3. In a steam boiler, the combination with the fines and ue sheets, of separated return flue boxes adapted to connect the corresponding ends of the lines in independent series, whereby the products of combustion are passed through separate successive series of flues; said tiue boxes being also provided with caps which permit access to said boxes and fines, substantially as set forth.
4. In a steam boiler, the combination with the fines and Iiue sheets, of separated return tiue boxes adapted to connect the corresponding ends of the tlues in independent series ,whereby the products of combustion are passed through separate successive series of flues, substantially as set forth.
5. In a steam boiler, the combination with the ues, of return flue boxes adapted to connect the corresponding ends of the tiues, and an independent water jacket for each return flue box, substantially as set forth.
6. In a steam boiler, the combination with the tiues, of separated return flue boxes adapted to connect the corresponding ends of the iues in independent series, and a flange provided with countersunk holes for the recep tion of bolts by which each of said boxes is secured in place, substantially as set forth.
7. In a steam boiler, the combination with the flue sheets and tlues thereof, of separated return flue boxes adapted to connect the corresponding ends cf said flues, in independent series and a water head surrounding said flue boxes and in open communication with the main boiler, substantiaily as set forth.
8. In a steam boiler, the combination with the iue sheet and tiues thereof, of separated return flue boxes adapted to connect the corresponding ends of the fines in independent series, whereby the products of combustion are passed through separate successive series of flues, said flue boxes having a recess to receive suitable packing to make a tight joint with the flue sheet, substantially as set forth.
9. In a steam boiler, the combination with the ues of return flue boxes, provided with a partition or partitions forming separate chambers and connecting the corresponding ends of the flues, substantially as set forth.
10. In a steam boiler, the combination with the flues, of return flue boxes provided with a partition or partitions forming separate chambers and surrounded by water and connecting the corresponding ends of the lines, substantially as set forth.
11. In a steam boiler, the combination with the flues and flue sheets thereof, of return iue boxes attached to the iue sheet and surrounded by water and adapted to connect the corresponding ends of the dues, substantially as set forth.
