UNITED STATES PATENT Tr ton.
ALVA ILOAMPBELL, OF WEST ALEXANDRIA, OHIO.
SURGICAL TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 516,587, dated March 13, 1894.
Application filed May 8,1393- Serial N0.473|333. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVA H. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Alexandria, in the county of Preble and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Sofa and Surgical Table, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a combined sofa, surgeons table, and chair, with mechanism for adjusting it to various positions, heights, angles and inclinations.
The various features of my invention are fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 4 is a section on line 00,00, Fig. 3 showing in end elevation the suspending and adjusting stirrups. Fig. 5 is a-detail view of one'of the stirrups. Fig. 6 is a detail view of one of the coupling links, and Figs. 7 and 8 are detail views showing a locking device for ho1ding the pillow frame in any desired position.
The base frame of my combined device is composed of longitudinal rail 1, feet 2, coupled together by a socket bracket 3 there are three sockets for each bracket, oneto receive each of the posts 2, and the other socket for the rail 1, thereby uniting the structure of the frame firmly together making a light, strong and solid frame upon which is superimposed the sofa, chair and table structure. These parts are constructed as follows:
5 represents legs or pendent arms supported in metallic sockets pierced vertically through the socket bracket 3; these pendants are preferably provided with notches or gains 5 into which a keeper6 enters to hold the pendants in any adjusted position. The table or bed is supported upon these pendants by the following instrumentalities:
7 7 represent stirrups, each of which is pivotally connected at its ends to the bed or sofa frame through the medium of links 8 pivoted to the ends of the stirrups and to the brackets 9 which are secured to the under side of the bed or sofa frame. The stirrups are also pivotally mounted centrally between their ends, as at the point 7, Fig. 5, to the upper ends of the legs or pendants 5, for the, purpose hereinafter explained.
11 represents upholstering placed upon the bed.
12 represents ways formed of the bed outside of the upholstering upon which the pillow or chair frame 13 and bolster 14 respectively rest and slide. I
15, 15 represent hook-shaped guide-straps secured to the frame-piece 13 to engage around the frame 10. In order to hold the frame 13 in any desired position on the frame 10, I
provide a series of locks, each of which is composed of an eccentric 17 adapted to be rotated for engaging it with an elastic plate a secured to the frame 13, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8. The eccentrics extend through the hook-shaped straps 15, as shown in Figs. 1 and 7, and are provided at their outer ends with suitable handles by which to operate them in such manner that when an eccentric is turned in the proper direction the plate a is forced against the frame 10, thereby clamping the latter between said plate and the lower end of bracket 15.
The chair or pillow frame is provided with thehinged back 16 supported upon the subframe 13. 18 represents a locking device for locking said back to any desired angle of inclination from an incline as a pillowsupport to a vertical or nearly vertical chair support.
The pendants 5 are hinged to the stirrups 7 so that the stirrups may be rocked upon the said pivot, and thus the bed may be inclined in either direction. In order to hold the bed to any desired plane to the horizon I provide locks 19 which engage with notches in the segment A.
20 represents springs for holding said locks normally in engagement with the stirrups.
21 represents a cord operated by the han die 22 for retracting the locks 19 and adj usting the bed to any desired angle of inclination to the horizon. When the handle'22 is released the locks re-engage and lock the pendants to the stirrups to hold the bedto such adjustment.
23 represents handles for operating the locks 6. 24 represents a spring for holding said locks normally in engagement.
Mode of operation: It will be seen that as the bed is hinged to the pendants 5Jrespectively, either one may be raised without raising the other, and the bed will look upon such centers to give any desired inclination without binding on moving parts. By means of the stirrups 7 being hinged to the pendant and hinged to the bed frame by links both angles of inclination may be obtained as said stirrups act as universal joints so that the inclinations of support to vertical and horizontal lines may be simultaneouslyobtained by these instrumentalities. Suppose it is desired to elevate the lounge or bed at one end only; one of the keepers is withdrawn as it is readily raised up. If, now, it is desired to incline it to the horizon the locks 20 are withdrawn and the angle of inclination obtained, the handle 22 is released and the locks reengaged to hold the parts in the adjusted position. If it is desired to use the structure as achair the back ldis elevated andthe lock 18 manipulated to adjust it to any desired inclination. The bolster 14 may be removed or adjusted back and forth to the chair or pillow support.
By the means herein shown I obtain a light,
strong and readily adjustable article which may be used as a sofa, chairor operating table, as occasion may require.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination with a base frame, and a bed or sofa frame, of pendent legs or arms adjustable on the base frame, and stirrups pivotally mounted on the pendent legs or arms, and having their extremities pivotally connected with the bed or sofaframe, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a base frame, and a bed or sofa frame, of pendent legs or arms adjustable in the base frame, stirrups pivotally mounted between their extremities on the upper ends of the pendent legs or arms, and links pivotally connecting the ends of the stirrups to the bed or sofa frame, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a base frame, and a bed or sofa frame, of pendent legs or arms adjustable in the base frame, stirrups pivotally mounted between their extremities on the upper ends of the pendent legs or arms, links pivotally connecting the ends of the stirrups to the bed or sofa frame, and locking devices for engaging the stirrups in j uxtaposition to their pivotal attachment to the pendent legs or arms, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a base frame, and a bed or sofa frame, of pendent legs or arms movable vertically in the base frame, locking devices for engagingthe pendentlegs or arms and sustaining them in their adjusted position, stirrups pivotally mounted centrally between their ends on the upper ends of the said legs or arms, and provided with toothed segments in juxtaposition to the pivotal attachment, devices for engaging the toothed segments, and links pivotally connecting the ends of the stirrups with the bed or sofa frame, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a base frame, and a bed or sofa frame, of pendent legs or arms movable vertically in the base frame, locking devices carried by the base frame and adapted to engage the said legs or arms forsustaining them in their adjustedpositions,:rockingstirrups pivotally mounted centrally between their ends to the upper ends of the said legs or arms, links pivotally connecting the ends of the stirrups to the bed or sofa frame, and locking devices for locking the stirrups when rocked to the desired position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
