Be it known that I, CARL F. MANKEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Em porium, 1n the county of Cameron, State of Penn- Sylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, of which the following is aspecitication, reference being had therein to the accompanying draw- 1ngs.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in folding beds, and it h as for its objects among others to provide a simple and cheap construction in which the head piece forms an ornament to the structure when in its upright or folded position and as the bed is turned down into its horizontal position the head piece falls into position to support the head of the bed, it carrying feet or legs for this purpose. The head piece with lts legs is designed to swing so that when in one position the face of the legs willlie against the front or bottom of the bed and when in the other position lie against the upper end thereof and there be supported without the employment of extraneous means. When the bed isin its horizontal position suitable means may be employed for holding the head piece 1n position to form a rigid support for that end of the bed. No means are required, other than the hinges which connect the head piece to the bed, to cause the head piece with its legs to fall into position to supportits end of the bed as the latter is brought into its horizontal position. The bolts or trunnions on which the foot of the bed is mounted to swing serve, together with the supports, to form the foot-end support for the bed in either of its positions.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the a-ppended claims.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bed in its upright or folded position with the head piece standing at an angle. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same in its horizontal position. Fig'. 3 is a central vertical section through the bed in its upright position With the head piece in the position it assumes when the bed is in its horizontal position.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the foot supports consisting-of the end posts a of any suitable design and preferably mounted upon rollers a', and the connecting piece A connecting the said posts substantially centrally thereof with the upper edge terminating some distance below the upper ends of the posts in order that the bed may be pivotally mounted on the posts.

B is the bed; it may be of any desired form of construction, as plain or as fanciful as may be required, its under face being paneled So las to present a neat lappearance when in itsupright position aszseen in Fig. l.

The bed is pivotally mounted near one end in the following manner: Upon the adjacent portions of the posts a and the bottom of the bed are the sockets or castings C-in which are supported the horizontal rods or pins D on which the bed is free to swing easily from a vertical to a horizontal position or vice versa.

The pivots are so located that when the bed is thrown into its vertical position the connecting piece A forms a stop to limit the movement of the bed as will be seen in Fig. 3.

E is a head-piece which may be made as ornamental in design as may be desired. It is hinged to the end of the bed by suitable hinges e and at each end is provided with a leg F extending at a'right angle therefrom as seen in all ot' the views. rlhe pintles of the hinges are so located at the corner of the end of the bed that when the bed is in its vertical or folded position the under faces of the legs which are preferably straight lie iat against the end of the bed and form a close joint, making an ornamental top or cornice to the bed. Vhen it is desired to lower the bed into a horizontal position for use this head piece swings down automatically, or it may be swung down by hand, until what was the front face of the legs or head-piece lies dat against the bottom of the bed at right angles to the former position as seen in Figs. 2 and 3 when it forms a support -for that end ot the bed as will be readily understood from Fig. 2. The head-piece may be held in this position by suitable means, as a hook G plvoted on the side of the bed as seen in Fig. l and designed to engage an eye or staple or other means on the end of the head-piece or on the leg as shown in Fig'. 2.

The staple or eye is designated by the letter g.

What I claim as new is- 1. The combination with the foot posts and their connecting piece, of a bed pivotally mounted on the foot posts, the head piece carrying legs extended at right angles to the face thereof, and hinged to the opposite end of the bed at the corners with their pintles in line with the front or under face of the bed Whereby said hinge piece is constructed to fold against the end of the bed when the latter is in avertical position and against the under face of the bed when in ahorizontal position and provided with lugs, the staple or eye on the outer face of one of said lugs and a hook pivoted on the side of the bed to cooperate with said staple or eye to hold the head piece with its front face against the under face of the bed, substantially as specified.

2. The combination with the bed body pivotally mounted near its foot, ot' a head piece hinged at its corners to the underl face of the head of the bed with the pintles of the hinges in line with the front face ot' the bed and having rectangular portions at its ends and the legs on said portions and extending at right angles to the length of the head piece to lie dat against the end of the bed when in its vertical position, and the front faces of the leg portions adapted to lie in close Contact with the front face of the bed when in its horizontal position whereby strain on said pintles is avoided, substantially as specified.
