JACOB J. BUSENBENZ, OF ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS.
CAR JOURNAL-BOX.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters f'atent No. 503,405, dated August 15, 1893.
Application filed November 8, 1892. Serial No. 451,287. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB J BUsENBENz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rock Island, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Dust-Guard Protector for Journal-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of journal boxes which are provided with dust guard slots, and the object of my invention is to exelude dust from the journal box by lining or facing the inner surfaces of the front and rear walls of said slot so that the diaphragm will fit closely and snugly in said slot.
In dust guard slots, as now constructed in journal boxes, the inner surfaces of the walls are uneven and rough, and for this reason the diaphragm whichisinserted in theslotdoes not fit closelyso as to excludedust, and as the aperturesthrough such walls are required to be vertically elongated so that the box can be raised when the brass is removed, or a new one put in,consequently the diaphragm through which the journal passes is necessarily of less length vertically than the depth of the slot. It has been found in practice that this old form of construction does not exclude the dust from the journal box and hence is objectionable, and especially when such box is also used as an oil cell, because the dust mingling with the lubricant, seriously affects the journal and the brass, cutting them and wearing them out rapidly.
I accomplish the object of my invention by the mechanism illustratedin the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of the longitudinal vertical section of the rear end of a journal box. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the form or shape of the lining or facing used upon the inner surfaces of the front and rear walls of the dust guard slot. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the dia" phragm and Fig. 4: is also a view of the longitudinal vertical section of the rear end of a journal box, showing the method by which said linings and diaphragm are inserted in the slot.
Similar n umerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, 1 represents the journal box,2 the dust guard slot, 3 the journah t the diaphragm and 5 the brass.
I use a facing or lining 6, preferably of felt, although any other suitable material may be used, and preferably this facing or lining is rectangular in form so as to conform to the rear and front walls of the dust guard slot and provided with an aperture 7 of similar form and size as the aperture 8 through the walls of said slot. The facing or lining 6 is thoroughly oiled and the diaphragm is placed in suitable position so that a facing or liningis upon either side. Then Iusetwo thin sheets of metal represented in Fig. 4 by 9-9 which are placed on the outer sides of said lining or facing and the same are then placed in said slot, and when in position the sheets of metal are withdrawn. The felt facing or lining being flexible fills the space between the walls of the dust guard slot and the diaphragm, so that dust will be ex cluded from entering the journal box.
From the description given, persons skilled in the art, will understand the method of construction and operation of my device.
In a pending application for Letters Patent, Serial No. 454:,528, filed December S, 1892, I show and describe another mode of making and introducing the dust-guard at the rear of the journal-box; and I do not herein claim the method or structure therein set forth.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a journal box provided with a dust guard slot, and in combination with the diaphragm and linings, the metal plates 9 9 for the purpose of placing said diaphragm and linings in position in said slot, substantially as described.
JAOOB J. BUSENBENZ.
