R. A. POOLE. OSGILLATORY CHILL.
No. 502,994. Patented Aug. 8, 1893.
IIIHIH IHIIIIHIU am'm-mtoz UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT A. POOLE, OE HOBOKEN, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 502,994, dated August 8, 1893.
Application filed March 7, 1893- Serial No. 464,949. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT A. POOLE, residing at Hoboken, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oscillatory Chills; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in chills for molding hooks, gaggers, &c.,the object of the invention being to construct a chill in such manner that the hooks or gaggers can be molded quickly and so thatthe subsequent handling of the hot castings will be avoided.
A further object is to produce an oscillating chill which shall be simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, occupy but a small amount of space and which shall be effectual in the performance of its functions.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features ofconstrucs tion and combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims;
The accompanying drawing represents my improved chill. f
A represents a frame comprising a base a,
and uprights or standards I). The tops-of the uprights or standards I) areprovided with bearings c for the reception of'trunnions d, dprojecting from the respective ends of an oscillatory chill B. The chill B is made with a number of molds B of the desired form to mold hooks, gaggers or other articles and is maintained in a horizontal position to receive the molten metal :by means of an adjustable rod or stop 0. The rod or stop 0 is provided at its lower end with screwthreads e which mesh with the screwthreads in a perforation made in the base a, a suitable nut e being provided for retaining the rod at the desired adjustment. One corner of the chill may rest upon the rod C, but I prefer to provide the chill with an ear or projection f adapted to rest on said rod. The chill B is also provided with a'handle D by means'of which to operate it. With the chill in the position shown in the drawing, the molten metal is poured into the molds B and permitted to set (which requires'but an instant) and the chill B is then oscillated to empty the hooks or gaggers on the ground, after which the chill is oscillated inthe reverse direction and made ready to receivemore castings.
The machine is exceedingly simple in construction, occupies but little space, and is effect'ual in the performance of its functions.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with an I-shaped base, and A-shaped standards having bearings at their apexes, of an oscillatory chill having ROBERT A. POOLE.
