H. ROTH. GOAL HOD AND ASH SIPTEL No. 501,299. Patented July 11, 1893.
" ATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN ROTH. OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COAL-HOD AND ASH-SIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,299,7dated July 11, 1893.
Application filed December 21, 1892. Serial No. 455,886. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERMAN ROTH, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-llungary, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coal-Hods and Ash-Sifters, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a coal hod having a removable bottom, and a guard covering an opening in the hod and having an opening for inserting a looking device.
It further consists of the combination of parts hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a coal hod and ash sifter embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a central vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 represents a bottom plan view thereof. Fig. 4 represents a vertical section of a portion on an enlarged scale. Fig. 5 represents a section of a portion on line Fig. 4. Fig. 6 represents a front view of the lower portion of the hod.V
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings: A designates a coal hod and B the base or foot thereof, secured to which latter is a horizontally-extending cross bar C, which forms the bearings for the rotary screen or sifter D.
G designates a diametrical crossbar secured to the peripheral rim E', and having its end passed through slots F, F', of the base B, one of said ends having a handle E for reciproeating the sifter, the said bar G carrying the axle pin H of the sifter, and said pin being mounted on the cross bar C.
J designates a removable bottom which is passed through an opening K in the lower part of the hod, and occupying a position above the sifter D, said bottom being adapted to be withdrawn through said opening.
Within the base B, on the under side of the bottom J at one end thereof, in the present case the front, are ears L in which is journaled the latch M, whose nose is adapted to engage with the shoulder N on the inner periphery of the rim of the sifter D, said nose when in operative position extending vertically, asmost clearly shown in Fig. 4, and engaging with the shoulder N, whereby the bottom is locked. To the outer end of the journal M of the latch, is secured an ear P, on which is mounted the weighted or gravitating handle Q, which when the bottom J is within the hod, is parallel with the latch M, whereby the latter is held locked with the shoulder N. To the outer end of the bottom J is secured the guard R, which closes the opening K and forms the bearings for the outer end of the journal M', said journal having a collar S therein, the same abutting against the guard R, so as to relieve the ears L of strain when the bottom J is moved into the hod.
The operation is as follows: When it is desired to sieve ashes, the handle Qis operated to impart a quarter turn to the latch M, and the bottom drawn out by said handle, the latch M passing through the opening or slot K. The ashes may now be placed in the hod and the sifter rotated by the handle E, the fine ashes passing through the sifter and dropping into the base B, while the cinders and coal remain on the sifter from which they may be readily removed. The bottom J may now be restored, the latch having been properly turned, so as to pass through the slot K, and when said bottom reaches its home position, the handle Q is let-go or turned, and the latch M is moved into engagement with the shoulder N, so that the bottom is locked, and prevented from accidental displacement. Coal, dac., may now be placed in the hod, and the latter carried as usual, the bottom J supporting the former and preventing the same from reaching the sifterz One end of the brace bar plays in the slot F, where the handle E is connected with said bar, while the other end-of the same plays in the opposite slot F. The barrests on the bottom walls of said slots F, F", and supports the sifter thereon so that the same is prevented from being broken down.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isx Y 1. Acoal hod having an opening in its side, near its base, a removable bottom provided with a guard covering said opening, said guard being provided with an opening for inserting a locking device, said parts being combined substantially as described.
IOC
2. coal hod having an opening in its side near its base, a removable bottom, and a guard with an opening, said bottom being provided on the under side with ears, and a latch journaled in said guard and ears, said parts being combined substantiail7 as described.
3. A coal hod having an opening in its side near its base,a removable bottom provided with a guard and ears, a latch jonrnaled in said guard and ears journaling a latch, and a sitter having a peripheral rim engaging the nose of said latch, said parts being combined substantially as described.
4. A coal hod having an openingin its side near its base,a removable bottom provided with a guard and locking device, and a sieve having secured thereto a diametrical cross bar extending through the sides of said liod near its base, said bar being provided with a handle for reciprocating said sieve, said parts being combined substantially as described.
5. A coal hod having an openingin its side near its base, a removable bottom provided with a guard and locking device, and a sieve under said bottom having a peripheral rim, and a diametrical cross bar secured to said sieve, said parts being combined substantially as described.
6. A coal bod having an opening in its sido, near its base, a removable bottom Working in said opening, provided with a guard for covering the same, said bottom having on its under side ears,a latch having a handle, and nose journaled in said guard and ears, a sieve under said bottom provided with a peripheral shoulder engaging said nose of said latch, and a diametrical cross bar attached to said sieve and extending through the sides of said hod near its base, said cross bar being provided with a handle for reciprocating said sieve, said parts being combined substantially as described.
7. A coal hod having a base with cross bar, a removable bottom, a sitter having a diametrical bar pivoted to said cross bar of the base, a handle to said sitter bar projecting through an opening in the base, and a latch jonrnaled in said ears on said bottom and having a nose engaging the rim ot the sitter, said parts being combined substantially as described.
HERMAN ROTH.
