IMPROVEMENT IN COAL- -SCUTTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,953, dated November 14, 1865.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY S. PRATT, of the city and county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improw'ements in Goal-Scuttles; and I do hereby declare that the same is described and represented in the accompanying specification and drawings, and to enable others skilled in the art to make the same, I will proed to describe its construction by referring to the drawings and letters ofreferenee marked thereon.
The nature of this invention will be clearly understood from the specification and drawings. The object desired to be attained thereby is to provide a means whereby I may be enabled to use a poorer quality of iron than that usually used for that purpose.
In the ordinary way of making coal-scuttles it has been necessary to hammer or draw the iron at the lower edge of the body in order to form thejoint; but the quality ot'iron now used will not permit of such treatment, because in drawing itis liable to crack and break and thereby make imperfect work; hence I have devised this improvement.
In the accompanyingdrawings I have shown two forms of my improvement.
In Figure 1 A is the body of the scuttle, B the lifting-handle, G the tipping-handle. D is abase and bottom made in one piece of cast metal, having a slight rim around its upper edge to receive the lower edge of the body A. E is a rim made of such size and shape as to fit into the bottom edge of the body and to the bottom of the base. (See Fig. 1.) The lower edge of the body is turned underinto a recess formed in the lower and outer corner of the rim E, and the base and body are both secured to the rim by means of rivets a.
In Fig. 2 E is the bottom, having the rim formed thereon in one piece of cast metal and. fitted to the body A, and secured as before described. D is the base, having a slight rim to receive the lower end of the body without a bottom, but having lugs for the purpose of riveting or securing it (the base) to the rim E. Thus the body is first made of the desired form, and the rim, either with or without the bottom, is dropped into the lower edge of the body and then riveted thereto. The lower edge of the body projects a little below the sides of the rim, so as to allow it to be turned under between the rim and base, to form the joint, after which the rim E and base D are secured together. Thereby I am enabled to use a cheaper quality of iron and produce a cheap er and better article for trade and use. I believe I have thus shown the nature, construction, and advantage of this my improvement, so as to enable a person skilled to make and use the same.
What I claim, therefore, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- As a new improved article of manufacture, a coal-scuttle, the combination of the base D, rim E, and body A, constructed substantially as described.
