Description

(No Model.) I I J: R. MIKE'SEL'L; I THILL COUPLING- No. 508,896. Patented Nov.14,11893.
' UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
JACOB MIKESELL, OF CHARLOTTE, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JERRIE MIKESELL, OF SAME PLACE.
THlLL-COU PLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,896, dated November 14-, 1893.
Application filed July 31,1893- Serial No. 482.013. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
1% it known that I, JACOB R. MIKESELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charlotte, in the county of Eaton and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Thill-Ooupling, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in thill couplings.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of thill couplings, and to provide a simple and inexpensive combined thill coupling and anti-rattler, in which the thill or pole-eye will be cushioned when in operative position, and will be loosened when lowered to facilitate changing, and in which the cushion may be adjusted forward and secured in such adjustment to provide a positive anti-rattler.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings-Figurel is a perspective view of a thill coupling constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings. f
l desiguatesan axle clip, provided with forwardly extending side plates 2 having depending ears at their front ends and having pivoted between the latter by a coupling bolt 2, an eccentric eye 3 of a thill iron 4, which is cushioned by a block 5 of rubber or similar elastic material. The cushion 5 has a concaved front face, and is arranged in rear of and is adapted to engage the eccentric eye 3, which bears against the cushion and is prevented rattling when it is in an elevated position when the vehicle is in use; but when the shafts or pole is lowered by reason of resting on the ground, after unhitching, the eccentric eyeis partially rotated sufficiently to carry it out of engagement with the cushion 5 to enable shafts to be removed for the attachment of a pole, and vice versa. The cushion may be advancedas it becomes worn, and it is held at the proper adjustment by a horizontally disposed bolt 6, arranged in horizontal slots 7 of the side plates 2 of the axle clip. The
head of the bolt .bears against the outer face of one of the side plates, and a nut 7 engages the other side plate and securely clamps the cushion, which is provided with 'a perforation to receive the bolt 6.
It will be seen that the coupling and antirattler is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, that it forms a positive anti-rattler, and that it facilitates the changing of shafts for a pole and vice versa.
Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention. Y
What I claim is- A combined coupling and anti-rattler com prising an axle clip provided with forwardly extending side plates having depending ears and provided above the same with horizontal slots, a coupling bolt, an eccentric eye pivotally mounted between the ears by the coupling bolt, an elastic cushioning block arranged in rear of the eccentric eye and engaged by the same When the eye is in operative position, and a securing bolt passing through the adjustable cushioning block and arranged in .said slots and holding the cushioning block at any desired adjustment, substantially as described.
In testimony thatl'claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
JACOB R. MIKESELL.
Witnesses: I
' FRANK G. BAKER,
J. B. SMITH.
