PERMUTATlON-LOCK' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,820, dated June 6, 1893.

To all whom it may concerm-Q Be itknown that I, LEoPoLD E. SCHNEIDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galena, in the county of Jo Daviess and State of Illinois, have invented certain newand useful Improvementsin Perm utation-Locks,of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawlngs.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in permutation or combination locks adapted for use on house doors, &c., and
lock covered by Patent No. 47 3,7 86 which was granted to me April 26, 1892; and the object of the invention is to simplify and improve the construction of various parts of said look, as will hereinafter appear.
In the drawings:-Figure 1 is a front elevation of my lock, showing it detached from a door, the inner knob and the bell being removed. Fig. 2 is a view of the inner side of the face plate. Fig. a detail view of one of the tumblers. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the bell ringing device. Fig. 5 is a front view of thelock the face plate being removed. Fig. 6 is a horizontal longitudinal section of the lock, and Figs. 7 and '8 details which are hereinafter described.
The look, as shown, is adapted to be secured to the inner face of the door, and its casing a may be of any suitable construction. Alatch bolt bis mounted in the casing and is provided with alateral enlargement within said casing, and an opening I) is formed in this enlargement within which work the two arms 0 c of the inner knob spindle c. This knob spindle is constructed and operated as in my former patent. The outer knob-spindle (1 extends into the lock casing and carries and operates a series of circular tumblers e, f and g. The innermost tumbler eis formed with a cylindrical hub (2' upon which the others-fand g are placed,the tumblers f and g being placed loosely thereon. The disk or tumbler h is connected to the hub e by an inwardly projecting lug h which enters a recess (2 formed in the outer end of said hub and causes said tumbler h to turn with tumbler e.
The tumblers c,fand g are provided on their peripheries with convex teeth, having concaved spaces between them, and on their adjoining faces with annular grooves and in these grooves are placed the adjustable pins or stops bymeans of which the combination of the lock isvaried. The tumblers are each provided with a radial slot t and these slots must register with each other at a particular point in the revolution of said tumblers before the lock can be operated, as explainedin my former patent.
j is a radial pin projecting from the outer knob-spindle and normally resting in a recess 6" formed in the hub e" of the tumblers; 7c is a spring which surrounds the spindle d between the door and the inner side of the outer knob, which by its tension forces said knob outwardly, thereby retaining pin j in the recess 3 and causing the tumblers e and h to normally rotate with the spindle d.
Z is a sleeve which is journaled axially in line with the spindle d, the journalingmeans at one end being the lock casing and at the other end an annular cavity in the end of the hub e, into which the reduced portion of said sleeve extends. The central openingin this sleeve is circular to fit the cylindrical spindle d, but a recess-l is formed at one side of said opening into which may be slid the pin j on the spindle (1 when the tumblers are in the proper position to permit of the withdrawal of the latch bolt.

p is an outwardly extending lug which is formed on the outer face of the yoke 12 and projects into and fits and works within ahorizontal slot, formed in the outer face plate of the lock-casing, and accurately guides and materially aids in supporting said yoke and preventing it binding or workingloose. A slot 1) is formed in the latch bolt b, and the end of the arm 0 engages the inner wall of said slot, thus permitting the latch-bolt to be drawn inwardly without affecting the position of said arm 0.
q q are flat springs which are secured to the lock casing, their free ends being bent as shown, and adapted to engage the teeth of the tumblers and hold them in their adjusted positions.

The operation of my device is as follows: When it is desired to open the door from the outside, the tumblers are first properly adjusted in the usual manner by the outer knob.
The sounding of the bell may be used as a starting point in working the combination, or it may be arranged, as shown in the drawings, to have the bell sound when the tumblers are in position to permit the withdrawal of the latch bolt. A vertically sliding plate to is secured to the lock casing and is provided with the circular opening w' and the vertical slots connected thereto, and it is adapted to engage the spindle d, by means of the annular groove d in the outer end thereof, when said spindle is forced inwardly from the outside to retain said spindle in its innermost position, thus adapting the lock to be readily opened by turning the outside knob.
The tension of springs q against the tumblers is regulated by a screw g which is tapped. through the lower side of the lock caseeasao ing, itsupper end bearing against the under side of said springs as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is l. A permutation lock consisting of a casing, alockingbolttherein, longitudinally movable spindle, as cl, journaled in the casing and provided with a knob, a hub or sleeve ejournaled on said spindle, permutation devices carried by said sleeve, a lug or pin projecting from the spindle and normally resting in a recess in the outer end of the hub or sleeve 6', a sleeve Zjournaled axially in line with the sleeve 6', said sleeve havinga recess adapted to register with the recess in sleeve e, a spring normally pressing the spindle outwardly, and means for connecting the sleeve Z to the looking bolt, substantially as described.
2. In a permutation lock the combination of a casing, a sliding bolt therein, a longitudinally-movable spindle journaled in said casing, permutation devices carried by said spindle, a sleeve journaled axially in line with, and adapted to be engaged by said spindle and to be turned with it when desired, said sleeve being provided with oppositelyprojecting arms, a sliding U-shaped yoke 77. hav-.
ing its arms in engagement with the arms of said sleeve, and provided with an arm 0 engaging the bolt, and a lug p formed on the outer face of the yoke and fitting and working in a slot in the lock casing substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a permutation lock the combination of a casing, a sliding bolt and means for operating the same, a spindle journaled in the casing and carrying a series of permutation disks, the outer disk being provided with a stud, an arm pivoted to the casing its free end being in the path of the stud carried by the disk, said arm at its free end being beveled downwardly on its inner face, a bellstriking arm carried by said arm, a spring to normally hold said arm in the path of the operating stud, and a bell, substantially as described.
