Description

UNITED STATES NATHAN ADAMS,
MACHINE FOR DRAWING PATENT OF ALTOONA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPlKES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN ADAMS, ot' Altoona, in the county of Blair and State ot' Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Drawing Spikes; and l do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specilication, in which- A Figure l is a l'ront view of my invention; Fig. 2, a plan or top view ot' the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
rlhis invention relates to a new and improved device for drawing` spikes, more especially designed for drawing railroad-spikes 5 and it consists in the employment or use ot a sliding stock in connection with jaws or nippers and a lever, all arranged in such a manner th at the desired work may be performed expeditiously and without bending or injuring the spikes, so that the latter may be again used.
A represents a base-plate, having two nprights,B B, attached, the upper ends ot' which are connected by a semicircular har, C.
D represents what I term a sliding stock, the same being fitted on the uprights B B, so that it may move freely np and down thereon. This stock is provided with two inclined sides, c c, (shown'clearly in Fig. l by dotted lines,) and to the rear side of said stock there is secured an eccentric, E, which is provided with lowered by operatin g this eccentric.
G G represent two curved jaws or nippers, which are pivoted at their upper ends to an eye, b, iittedloosely on a vertical guide-rod, H, attached to the center of stock D and passing up through the har C. The lower ends of these jaws or nippers are prevented from coming in contact by pins c c, attached to the stock D. (See Fig. l.)
Thedeviceis nsed as follows: The implement is placed upon the tie, with the lever F in a horizontal position at the left-hand side. The lever is then turned over to the right, and the jawsior nippers descend andopcn automatically, passing over the spike. The lever F is then turned to the lei't, which raises the stock D, the inclined sides a pressing the jaws in contact with the spike, the stock then coming in contact with eye b, raising the jaws or nippers and drawing the spike, the operation being repeated until the spike is fully drawn.
l claim as new and desire to secure ters Patentrlhe sliding stock D, operated by the eccentric E and lever F, or their equivalents, in connection with the jaws or nippers G G, pivoted to the eye b on the guide-rod Het the stock, all arranged to operate in the manner substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
