UNITED STATES PATENT Grmcn.
GEORGE E. MCCUNE, OF HARVEYSBURG, OHIO.
MARKER FOR CORN-PLANTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,744, dated May 2, 1893.
Application filed December 9,1892. Serial No. 454,649. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. MoOUNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harveysburg, in the county of Warren and State of Ohio, have invented a newand useful Improvement in Corn-Planters, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the rear end of a planting machine provided with my improved reversible marking bar; Fig.2, a plan view of the same; Fig. 3, a rear elevation and Fig. 4, a perspective detail of some of the parts.
My invention relates. to an improved at tachment for corn planters. In the use of these machines, it is customary to employ a laterally swinging arm, carrying on its outer extremity a marker to indicate the proper location of the succeeding row. As hitherto constructed these markers make it necessary,
- when about to turn at a headland, for the driver to alight from his seat and throw the arm to the opposite side of the machine, thereby consuming time and involving extra labor.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device whereby the driver without dismounting may easily shift the marker from side to side or lift it over stumps or other impediments. It is also contemplated to construct the device in such a manner that with minor modifications it may be readily applied to all planters of the class indicated without departing from the principle of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings and specification, it is not considered necessary to illustrate or describe the operating mechanism common to planting machines in general.
In order to apply my invention, I provide a transverse i at bar 1 which is securely bolted to the rear of the planter frame 2. An arched bar 3 having U shaped extremities 4; depending below the plane of the transverse bar 1, is bolted to the rear ends of the frame bars. A bearing box 5 is secured on the bar 1 and also upon the rear frame bar 6. A shaft 7 having a bevel cog wheel 8 is journaled in said bearing box and engages a bevel cogged segment 9 attached to a transverse rock shaft 10. One extremity of this shaft carries a hand lever 11 which is provided with the usual locking mechanism and moves alonganotched quadrant bar 12. The rear of the shaft 7 is bent at a right angle forming a shank 13 which is bolted to the marker arm 14, which has a vertical transverse swing along the rear side of the arch 3 and is held in relation therewith by a strut 15 provided with an anti-friction roller 16. The upper portion of the arch bar is stayed by a rearward extension of the seat frame 17 having vertical forked projections 18 which afford clearance for the roller 16 as it moves from side to'side. Rearwardly projecting hooks 19 are secured to the extremities of the arch bar and limit the depression of the marker arm.
The operation of the device will be readily understood. It will be observed that when the position of the operating lever is approximately central on the locking segment 12, the marker arm stands in a vertical position. It is evident that a movement of the lever in either direction from its vertical position will determine the side on which the marker arm is desired to swing. It will also be seen that by means of the locking mechanism of the operating lever, the marker arm may be adjusted and sustained at any desired angle of inclination and thus adapted for work on sloping ground.
What I claim as new is=- 1. The combination with a corn planter of the herein described rock shaft, the operating lever attached thereto and provided with locking mechanism, the bevel gear actuated by the said lever, the bearing box and the shaftjournaled therein, the reversible marker arm attached to the right angled extension of the said shaft, the arched bar adapted to support and guide the marker arm and having U shaped extremities all combined and arranged, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. In a corn planter, the combination of the transverse bar 1, and the arched bar 3, having U shaped extremities 4, both of said bars being bolted to the frame, the bearing box 5, and shaft 7, having beveled cog wheel 8, journaled in said box, and the segment 9, and rock shaft'lO, operated by the hand lever 11, substantially as set forth.
3. In combination with the transverse rock 16, as it moves from side to side, substantially 1c shaft having a cogged segment attached to it, as set forth. and actuated by hand lever 11, moving along In testimony that I claim the foregoing I the notched bar 12, the marker arm 14:, to have hereunto set my hand, this 19th day of which the rear of the rock shaft is fastened, November, 1892, in the presence of witnesses.
said aim being held by strut 15, having an GEORGE E. MOOUNE. antifriction roller 16, and the arch bar 3, Witnesses: stayed by the seat frame 17, which has forked PATRICK HIGGINS,
projections 18, to'allow clearance for the roller J. B. SOROGGY.
