CULTIVATOR;

th \m f Inventors wmssesk f 34. /4 mflm 4/?) M- 7 way UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NELSON B. ROBINSON AND JOHN B. ROBINSON, OF THE GROVE, TEXAS.
CULTIVATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,207, dated April 11, 1893.
Application filed September 26, 1892. Serial No. 446,951. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, NELSON B. ROBINSON and JOHN B. ROBINSON, citizens of the United States, residing at The Grove, in the county of Coryell and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Onltivators; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The special object of the invention is to make a cultivator which will be readily adjustable to work between rows of plants having any distance apart, greater or less.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective View of my improved cultivator, and Fig. 2 a vertical, longitudinal section.
In the drawings, A represents the draft beam and A A the side-beams which are of equal length and not extending as far forward or back as the central beam A.
(J O are the handles connected near the rear end by a round rod 0 and attached at c c to the outside and upper ends of a metallic plate D which is V-shaped and fastened to the upper face of the beam A. The front ends of the handles are similarly fastened to a V- shaped plate E also secured to thetop of the draft-beam A.
F is a plate attached at the middle to the under side of beam A and parallel to plate E, the two plates being provided with corresponding slots e e, ff, through which pass the pins a a on the projecting ends of the beams A A. By means of these slots and pins, the adjustment of beams A A does not change their desired angle to the draft-beam and the proper set of the shovels or teeth are always preserved.
G G are two cross bars which slide on the beams A A A and adjust beams A A so that the cultivator may work between rows which are at any required distance apart. In order to hold these cross bars G G at any point of adjustment as well as to move them to it,I connect them by the end-pivoted straps H H to one another and to the lever I by means of the pivoted rods J J, the lever being bifurcated and pivoted to the draft-beam A. In the bifurcation of the lever, I fulcrum a lever-catch K with the notches is arranged vertically at the front so as to fit over a transverse tooth L on the top of plate D and beam A. The rear end of catch K is to be operated by the foot of the plowman when he wishes to adjust the width of the cultivator.
What we claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
1. In cultivators having one fixed central beam and two expansible side-beams, the combination of the side-beams A A made adjustable laterally on a fixed cross bar at their front ends, the sliding cross bars G G, and means for sliding the cross bars, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with the cross bars G G adapted to slide on the beams A A A, of the bars H, the pivoted rods J, the bifurcated lever I pivoted to beam A, the toothed lever latch K and the tooth L made fast to the upper face of beam A, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
NELSON B. ROBINSON. JOHN B. ROBINSON. Witnesses:
EDWARD BOX, M. I. RAYBURN.
